Shock Collars

I have done both now.. the 'old' and the 'new' style of training
I can confirm both work... Years ago with my GSD, I used a pinch collar and the training instructors were dead set against training with treats, lol... I did a little Schutzhund work and you see all the Police K9's wear pinch collars, etc etc.. Shock collars can work for distance work, and the lowest settings aren't THAT bad (for big dogs!) I am NOT defending them, I have honestly never used one, and wouldn't because it doesn't suit ME.

HOWEVER< I have to say that positive reinforcement works just SO much better and faster, with less frustration to myself and my dog! Even if your timing is off, worst that can happen that he gets a free treat or sits down when you say come, points at MMM (I think that is who it was?) lol :winkgrin:

All I can think of is that poor Aussie... and how much easier and less stressful it could have been to train him with a clicker and treats!!!!

Or maybe they double team you so that when you are looking at one dog the other one runs off with the treat bag? :lol:

He's a class clown, except that he isn't in a class (yet!).

I had an argument with my friend at work today about a subject similar to this. Made him VERY mad at me. Guess I'll be sitting alone at lunch for my last graveyard shift on Friday night. :lol:

I would honestly like to know why the petstore here feels the need to stock the shock collars on the same aisle as the dog toys. I just don't understand the reasoning for that. :dead: I said something about it earlier, but it stil boggles my mind.

Because it sells..
People are lazy, lazy lazy! It promises results immediately etc etc.. Caesar uses it, and so on... Petstore doesn't give a rats youknowwhat... as long as it sells! We need MORE advocates for positive training, taking babysteps here in North America, in my opinion! SO I try to advocate the clicker at the dogpark etc etc... Remember I couldn't even buy a clicker at two of the petstores I went to in this darn city... There is a lot of work to do guys... Let's all advocate what we believe in... So telling people and pet store managers what we are looking for, etc etc... is a good first step!
 
Are you serious?! :eek2: I live in the sticks, and both Wal-Mart and PetSmart sell clickers.

They are hidden though, and you do have to look hard to see them. :rolleyes2:

I think they are a very Cesar Millan way of dealing with a problem.

Do you mean Martingales or chokes/prongs?

Martingales, on the surface, appear to be like a choke collar, but if properly fitted are absolutely NOT. They never tighten to choke. They only tighten to prevent the dog from slipping the collar. Shelties are classic escape artists with regular collars, given the circumference of their neck (along with the fur) and the relatively lean head shape.

A martingale allows the collar to be worn loose when not attached to a leash - and therefore, no matting. But tightens just enough when attached to a leash and dog starts to pull. No choking...ever!
