Shock Collars

I witnessed someone using a shock collar today. I was modified. Why would anyone allow this to be done to their dog? This poor puppy looked like he was in so much pain. He's lips were convulsing and he was crying.

I was at the dog park today with Bailey. I saw two guys around the age of 20 and a woman, who looked like 15 walking with an australian shepard. I was so excited for Bailey to get the chance to play with another herding dog. The woman is walking the dog towards the park. The dog starts lunging towards the dog park and then all of sudden it just starts acting funny. Jumping and biting the leash, lips convulsing and softly crying. My friend says "she has a remote. oh my God. I think he's wearing a shock collar." I felt so bad for this dog. They kept walking back and forth passed the dog park. Every time the dog exhibited poor leash behavior, the woman would shock him or yank his leash and say "no." From the way she was talking to the guys, I got the impression that they hired her to train their dog. I also overheard that the dog was only 8 months old. My friends and I kept talking loudly about how horrible shock collars are and how we would never hire a trainer that uses shock collars and etc. They walked back and forth for about 10 minutes and then left. Not once did she use positive reinforcement. So sad :( this poor dog is probably going to be afraid of the leash now. All she's doing is making this pup associated walking with being shocked.
 
Oh dear. Poor puppy!! I'm sure it doesn't know what the heck triggered the shock and is trying its darnest to figure it out. It probably made all kinds of random associations not necessarily what the trainer is hoping for (ie. lunge = shock). The pup might be thinking "fence = shock" or, god forbid, "other dogs (in the dog run) = shock".
 
Never ceases to amaze me.:mad: Even without the shock collar their timing horrible. Poor puppy.

I zapped myself on the arm(middle setting) with one years ago to see what it felt like. Alot of gundog trainers in S. Dak. used them. It hurt like hell. I would never use one.
 
That really upsets me...and I didn't even see it. Poor pup. It's so frustrating because that dog is already down a bad path. How will she ever learn to trust?!? :mad:
 
I think it's really sick and twisted that one of the pet stores here has the shock collars on the same aisle as the dog toys. :mad:

Victoria Stilwell did an episode on this. The owner had the shock collar turned up to level 8! Victoria dropped it down to level 2 and shocked the owner with it.

Needless to say the owner did not put the collar back on the dog!
 
This should be outlawed to sell !

Any owner that puts this on their poor pupper should have to wear it themselves and would not possibly subject their pupper to this hostility ! It's abuse.:cry:
 
How aweful. I don't know what I would have done if I saw that. I agree, the owners should put them arond their necks first and try it out.
 
I hate them also.I saw someone use one on a dog at the beach to get the dog to come back to her. Don't they use the collars on the dog also with invisible fencing? I also hate choke collars and prong collars.I was a t pet store last year and there was a lady with a Golden puppy looking for a choke collar and I went off on her.Also there is a dog trainer here that has an obedience place and she also does the training when the town offers it thru Parks and Rec and this lady is very heavy handed and all the dogs she trains she has the people get choke chains for their dogs.Well, I was down where she trains with my two and people were watching me .Some guy came up to me and starting asking me questions and he had a lab with a prong collar on and the dog was 8 months old.I asked him why he had a prong collar on the dog and he said his instructor said the dog needed it. I said let me guess is SO and SO your trainer and he said yes ans I politely said if I were you I would run not walk away from her before she ruins your dog.I just get so mad when I see her teach.:mad:

I hate choke collars as well. I've read that collars can cause tracheal collapse in dogs. If your dog is a bad puller it might not be as far fetched as you would think, especially with choke collars.

Unless somebody convinces me otherwise I'm certain that shock collars are a product of the devil. :mad:
