so last night i had to take Jasper to emergency again...

Not even a week after the gum incident, Jasper was back at the emergency hospital at 1 am. My husband and i always leave Jasper out when we leave cause hes totally potty trained and hes just great. But last night we come home to find jasper hiding in his crate... he NEVER does this... so i called him over and picked him up and he seemed really weird.. thats when i noticed the whole right side of his face was swollen like he had a marble in his cheek.. so i asked my husband to get w/e was in his mouth out... there was nothing in it..

I immediately started to freak out at that point.. my husband then opened his mouth and looked inside which is when we saw the electrical burn.. then we noticed a light was out.. he had chewed right through it. not once, not twice, but three times... talk about not learning from bad experiences...

so off i went with him to emergency to get him chest xrays and all the other exams... the doctor was amazed he was alive, and that he wasn't showing any signs of electrocution other than the burn in his mouth which was his only concern. So now we have to keep a close eye on that for the next 2 weeks...

i think jasper likes to give me panic/heart attacks...

and i've felt so terrible, cause i left him out and he hurt himself and we didnt know until an hour or more later... ugh...

thank god he is ok.. i hope to god there isn't another incident like this ever.. so prayers would be appreciated.. thank you so much
 
You need to puppy proof your home

You need to go around your home and correct anything that looks like a child /puppy would find interesting and fix it so jasper can't get into trouble. I would start crating him or confining him to smaller areas where he can't get into anything.
1.Check and cover all electrical wires that he can get at. They sell covers to hide wires, or just do as I've done and Duck Tape the exposed wire to the floor. Be certain all cabinets are closed and locked so he can't get into them. If you go into the Baby dept some stores sell an entire child proof kit. You were extremely fortunate this time that Jasper is still alive. :eek2: He's extremely curious I really suggest crating or confining for his own safety.:sadsmile: My prayers and thoughts are with you. Please Saint Francis watch over this curious pup and please make him Ok from his ordeal with the electric wires.
 
Holy cow! Poor Jasper! I am so glad it wasn't worst. I hope he gets better quickly. I also hope you don't have to take him back to the ER anytime soon.
 
I read this and just felt sick!!!! We found out, too, that crating isn't just for potty accidents. It's amazing what they get into when left to their own devices. St. Francis must have done some really fast talking to the Good Lord to keep Jasper on this side of the Bridge!! :eek2:
 
Try not to feel bad, electrical cords are not something I would have thought would be a problem with a dog/puppy either. Look at the incident as a learning experience. You've learned something new and Jasper is ok, that's whats important.

I too would prefer to leave Sadie uncrated when I'm not home but just have to accept that she's safest and happiest in her crate.
 
I am SO sorry for Jasper and for you. I can't remember how old he is... Snap is 13 mos and I don't trust him at large in the house, as he is a "fabric specialist". I crate him at night and take him to work with me during the week. However, I gate him in the kitchen for 4 - 5 hours on the weekends, if need be. This gives him more space. Would this be an option for you ?
 
Well, don't feel too bad. Our 4 month old Buddy, has chewed through several electrical cords--luckily none of the things were turned on. I couldn't think of anything to do to protect him, so thanks Elaine 2004! I have an exercise pen in the house with plastic underneath to keep him when I can't spend all day with him. It's slowing down the housebreaking, but at least he's protected from harming himself or harming our things. Also, now that it's getting warmer outside, we close off the stairs on our deck so that we can leave Buddy outside when we're gone. I think a lot of his housebreaking problems were cause by his obsession with our Bichon, Spike. We finally rehomed Spike last week with a wonderful family. Now Buddy has finally realized that there is someone else in the house besides the Bichon, and he is paying a lot more attention to us and learning better. So, good luck with Jasper. I'm going to start duct taping our electrical cords!!
 
I'm so glad he's ok! He must have quite the constitution! That boys is going to give you grey hair, if he hasn't already! :sadsmile:

I still crate when I'm out of the house. The boys are still just too unpredictable still at 12 months.

Though, we're starting at the cottage next weekend, and I really don't want to transport 2 crates, so I'm thinking the boys will sleep in the bathroom behind a baby gate when we're out boating and at night. The bathroom is directly across from our bedroom, so they can still see us and hear us.
 
Oh my gosh, what a scare for you! I've learned too that until they're two (and sometimes beyond, if they're inclined) anything is fair game to chew. You might consider an x-pen for when you leave, so you don't have to confine him to a crate and he can have some freedom, but not with anything dangerous. Throw some toys in with him and a bowl of water and he'll be fine. And safe! What a little stinker, poor guy. :eek2: So glad he is OK!!!
 
Mo Mo like to chew things in my house too, although he is 1 years old now.
He bited the wire in my house, then I replaced a new one, he chew that wire again, totally he bited 3 of it, now, I used a baby gate to avoid him to bite it, he just interest to bite that wire. Luckiy he didnt get hurt of it !!
He also bite the hole on the wall, my pillow cover...etc..
I did give him a lot of toy to chew..but I think he will be better when he get older...
