The Fuminator

I have a furminator also and LOVE it. Believe me, if you're planning on doing your own grooming its well worth the money. I managed to find mine at a discounted price on Ebay, or you may even want to keep an eye on kijiji.

I almost never dampen Sadie's coat before using it on her and don't find that it does any damage. At the same time, I'll admit that I probably should dampen the fur as it most definitely will be easier on the coat. Sadie just has a thing about being spritzed with water and dances around when I do it

Despite the videos, you most definitely do have to try and be gentle with it, not rip it through the coat as the video shows. I find that long, slow strokes with little pressure works well. You also have to be careful not to pull too much in extremely thick or sensitive areas, but that goes for most brushes.

People seem to either love it or hate it, you may have to try it out to decide

BarbV - That is a very good idea, using a spray in conditioner. I some times use some doggie deodorizer between baths but that would be great too! I'll have to give it a try

Just make sure that you just barely damp it. If you dampen it too much, the teeth can't seem to work as effectively.

I spritz the dog, rub in the water/shampoo so it works down a little, then rub a towel over top to remove any excess.

And yes, gentle is key! I too use long, slow strokes. Definitely not the fur-flying method on the video. Also means I can do this on a towel on the floor without fur flying everywhere.

And as I said, I don't use the Furminator for normal brushing. Just when their butts seem to be bulking up with extra baggage! I also don't use on the ruff or anywhere near the head. Just down the length of the backs and the backside.

Thanks so much! That helps a lot! OK I will give this a whirl and see how she likes it (or doesn't) :smile2:
Maybe i will try feeding her treats while I do this!

We bought the small furminator to use on Bailey and it seemed to work quite well. One thing I didn't know was that you should dampen their hair. Will try that when we get her back.

I realized when using it that going slowly was the best way and I was amazed how well it worked but I think I need to learn more about the best way to groom her. I see some comments that might indicate we were not brushing our girls the right way though they all looked stunning to us.

Easy way to support Sheltie Nation

Just a reminder to everyone that if you know you want to buy something via Amazon, to try and remember to visit Sheltie Nation first.

If you go to Sheltie Nation & then click on one of the Amazon ads, (regardless of what item is currently posted), Amazon remembers what website "referred" you to them. You can then go anywhere on Amazon & buy anything you want. Sheltie Nation gets the referral credit. :biggrin2:

Just don't leave Amazon until you are done checking out. If you come back later via another route, it wont remember.

For some reason, I thought it was only for puppy products! I'll keep that in mind - maybe change "my favourites" link for Amazon to Sheltie Nation! Just as a reminder! Do you know if it works for Amazon Canada too? I'm guessing not.
