I have never used one, but I believe Citronella collars basically spray citrus spray in the dogs face if they bark, I think, because they don't like the smell of citrus.
For shoelaces I use Tabasco sauce (turns the laces orange). Pet stores also sell products that are not harmful but taste terrible and don't stain. The problem with all these things is they don't last long, you have to keep reapplying.
Beware the tabasco sauce, though! I used it successfully on Neechee when he was younger, but after my parents kept him for a weekend, it suddenly stopped working. I eventually found out that my dad had been feeding Neechee tortilla chips and picante sauce! Turns out the little bruiser developed a love for hot peppers.
All I can say is this: you just have not experienced life if you've never slept in the same room as a small picante-gas spewing dog!

And, if I leave a roll too close to the edge of the vanity in there, she'll jump up and down until she can grab it. She knows she's not supposed to have it, so as soon as she gets it, she leads a merry chase as we all try to get it away from her before she shreds it to smithereens.
