The Vet Killed my Dog

I took my Sheltie to the vet today at 2pm. I took him because he was loosing hair and he had rashes on his skin and infected ears. A friend told me about Hypothyroid Disease. I read up on it and it sounded like it matched my dog perfectly...and was common in Shelties. Of course I wanted to take him to the vet to confirm what was wrong with him. They did blood work on him and they said that everything on him was fine. He had no problems.

His T4 levels were 1.3 which was low, all the websites that discussed Hypothyroidism in Shelties said that shelties had higher T4 requirements than other dogs and should be treated for Hypothyroidism if the T4 is below the upper third portion of normal. However, the vet said that it was not low enough for her to want to treat him for that. Pockets did however have a staph infection all over his body and in his ears. I knew that was a secondary symptom, but the vet said she wanted to treat that first...and then if the infection persisted she would consider Hypothyroidism. It sounded logical I guess.

She gave me some pills for him to take twice a day for 14 days (Cephalexin Cap 500mg 100#) and topical ear drops (Tresaderm Soln 15 ml) to apply 7 drops to each ear twice daily for 14 days.

I knew with school coming up it would be hard for me to give it to him in the afternoons so I wanted to wait until the rest of my family arrived home before I started the medicine. I waited until just before 6pm to give him the medicine. Dad arrived home a little late (~6:30) and I told him about the trip to the vet and the medicine she gave me. Then he went to check on the dog and he told me that Pockets was dying. At first I told he was joking, but pockets was laying there on his side, breathing hardly, could not get up, twitching, he lost control of his fluids. He drove him to the Emergency Pet Hospital but he was dead by the time we got there. He was dead at about 6:55. I think it was the medicine that killed him.

We buried him in his favorite spot in the yard just an hour ago. And that's it.

Michelle, I am so sorry for your loss. With it coming on so fast like that, I can't imagine what you and your family are going through right now. We are here for support and the angels are with your sheltie at the bridge.

omg I am so sorry Michelle.. I am literally here crying.. I could only imagine how you feel at this time. Actually NO I can imagine b/c I went through a situation where the vets were telling me there was nothing wrong with my sheltie and that she was fine and healthy and then to take her to another vet and say nothing wrong with her and then the last vet said how could they not see this problem she had.. but by the time they got to her it was too late. She had to be put to sleep and she was only a year old. I was so devastated. I still cry till this day for losing her and this was 3-4 yrs. ago. It's not easy to get through this painful time but then again I wish I had people like this on this forum to have talked too b/c they will understand the pain of losing a special sweetheart called a Sheltie. My thoughts are with you during this time.:(

Thank you you guys. I was so glad when I found this forum earlier today because I was so looking forward to getting my sheltie back in shape. I wanted to get him a new collar and new food and new shampoos and everything. He was 12 years old and he was slowing down...but it just seemed like he had so much more life left in him. Today when I started to clean up space for him in the car he seemed to pick up on what I was doing and he walked up to the door of the car and stuck his nose in, smiled and looked at me. When I put him in the car he snuggled up to the drivers seat and waited for me to get in.

It's just unbelievable that he died so quickly after I gave him the medicine. I didn't think the vet would have given me anything that could have been remotely as dangerous as this stuff must've been. I don't think she thought it was dangerous because she would have warned me. I kind of want to go back there tomorrow and explain what happened. I guess I just want to see them be as surprised and shocked as I am.

LaOsaLinda I'm sorry to hear about your loss as well. A Sheltie was the dog that I really really wanted since in 3rd grade. It took a long time before my family could look for a puppy and we spend several years until we found the sheltie that I took home. There's just no other dog like him and there never will be and that's just the point when you get a dog like him (a Sheltie) because they are so smart and so individual.

We had him since he was 6 weeks old and he was definitely a big personality in our family. It will be strange without him.

Shelletlover, Thanx for your words. I will be dreaming about my Sheltie crossing that bridge you speak of.

OMG I am so sorry Michelle about your dog. I can only imagine what you are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I must say it took me about a month before I could get used to not seeing Chasity (my sheltie) not greet me at the door. My parents wasted no time in getting me Sheba (german/chow mix) after Chasity. I literally got Sheba two days after my lose of Chasity and even then it wasn't easy but the transition was a bit easier for me b/c My very first dog was Chasity.. I wanted a sheltie since I was about 6-7 yrs old and I didn't get my first sheltie or dog period till I was 20. So I waited a very long time to get a sheltie and only have her for a year. You are very lucky to have had him for 12 yrs. Which again I am sure doesn't make it any easier to lose a dog like that. I truely believe shelties can really understand you. They are so intuned with our feelings its scary. It's almost as if my sheltie was my soulmate b/c she knew how I felt and sat there and did things a human would do to console someone. Strange but yet, AMAZING experience of my life. I swear Shelties are guardian angels sent from above to be in your life for certain reasons.. Even though he is no longer here physically.. I am sure you know he is still with you protecting you. I know this may sound strange but when I was still living with my parents after chasity's death sometimes it felt like she was still there. My current dog Sheba used to look in certain spots of the house where Chasity enjoyed being and she would stare as if someone or something was there and there wasn't. Then again Dogs do see differently than us and are more sensitive.

Michelle, my heart was breaking this morning reading your story about losing Pockets. I am so very sorry for your loss. Many of us on the forum have been through losing one of our beloved Shelties and we are here for you. There are no words that will console you now but our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry for your loss Michelle, I can't imagine what you must be going through. My thoughts are with you and your family, try and take comfort in knowing that Pockets is healthy and happy waiting at the Rainbow Bridge for you to return to him one day.

In order to get some closure you may want to look into what exactly caused his death.
