To debark or not to debark

I guess I better not mention I need soem advice on the color of quilt I need to buy to match my puppers since they spend more time (and room on it) then I do.

Oh, there's always room for SOME of that! Maybe you could die them all purple and make a purple quilt, and get a purple hat and bag to match! :eek2::biggrin2:

"When I am old, I shall wear Sheltie hair,
And a purple hat..."

Wasn't sure if anyone else would get the reference to the "purple hat". :biggrin2:

For those that don't know, it's a poem that describes what a woman sees when she looks in the mirror at different stages of her life, ages 3 through 80.

At 80, she finally figures out that life is too short to worry about what people think, dons her Purple Hat and goes out to have fun. The Purple Hat signifies her freedom to be herself.

The notion is: don't wait till your 80 to wear a Purple Hat....do it now! :smile2:

I did not choose debarking for Ariel, although it was available.

There are valid reasons for and against, however, what I object to is someone else making the decision for me.

Better debarked than in overcrowded shelters or euthanized.

In summary, I believe it should be legal and up to the individual owner who best knows their circumstances.

I have a 3 year old sheltie. Tend to be a Barker as is most shelties but this one has particularly LOUD bark. SMall in stature but Big in voice. Debating wether to debark or not. Show breeder tells me NO problem, do it. but i also heard some Major NIGHTmare stories about complications even causing DEATH. Should i do it...???????????

Indy was debarked before I got him, but you'd never know it to hear him! (I can't imagine what he would sound like if he WASN'T debarked).

It's mostly a personal choice, and in some few cases, a necessity, depending on where you live.

While I'm led to believe that the surgery is non-intrusive (spaying is worse), I wouldn't do it unless I had absolutely no choice- e.g. City by-law people breathing down my neck. I chose Shelties knowing full well that it was in their nature. I try to train them to bark appropriately. (By all means, bark at the lawnmower at the cottage where noone can here you. But don't bark at the kids playing next door at our city house).

I was just informed by a friend of a thread on the Australian forum Dogzonline and just need to share.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Taking a breeder's dogs away just coz they are debarked and she took them out in public, in a state where the act of debarking itself is not unlawful? HUH?? This so doesn't make any sense. And now these poor dogs have to suffer. I just don't get it.

-Edit-
Small edit - she is being charged for showing a debarked dog. Still pretty damn stupid in my books. What a ridiculous piece of legislation. If they are so concerned about debarking they should just outright make THAT illegal (without any carveouts) instead of penalising people who did it yonks ago. Aren't there more pressing and urgent animal cruelty cases they should be working on?? I mean, I'm no fan of debarking but there's no need to be stupid about it.

I agree. I'm no fan of debarking either. I think it's insane. All dogs bark. This is no secret. So why would you get a dog and debark it knowing it's going to bark? :confused2: While I do think it is wrong to debark a dog I do see where you are coming from. They should make the whole act of debarking illegal.

This is just as stupid as banning pit bulls. There's a county not far from where I am that has recently banned them. Where are those dogs going to go? The shelters will be jammed packed, and not many people from other counties are going to adopt a pit bull. When you allow one breed to be banned you open the door for others to be banned as well.

That sheltie shed all over my new furniture! Let's drive 'em out with pitch forks and torches y'all! :rolleyes2:

People are so stupid. Instead of charging the woman who debarked her dog why don't they come and arrest Smudge's breeder for animal endangerment for knowingly breeding two sick animals?
