Tramadol or Aspirin

My sheltie Holly will be 16 in June, weighs 6.9 pounds just recently lost 2 pounds in 5 months, she is in renal failure but not sure what stage. They had her on Deramax 12.5 mgs which from what I have read is way too much. They just pulled her off of it due to the vomiting. Would aspirin upset her stomach? They gave me tramadol to give to her but I really don't want to drug her up if I have other options! Any information here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Cheryl

I'm very sorry to hear about Holly's condition! I can understand your wanting to keep her comfortable. I'm not a vet and I think a vet is the best person to advise you on this, but I can tell you that aspirin will most likely upset her stomach. Tramadol is a "natural" medication used for pain and might be easier for her to take. But given her situation, follow your vet's advice on this.

I hope that Holly improves. Good luck to you.

meds

Thanks Ann, I am praying she has a few more years left in her, she has such high energy even with all the arthritic conditions, I really feel like I need to change Vets at this point, had a few problems so was just looking for general information. I hate the thought of changing vets at this stage but my vet seems to be somewhat pre occupied or??? Forgot to adjust the pain med, forgot she had a tooth with an issue a year ago and didn't feel 2 pounds off a dog that weighed 8.5 pounds 5 months ago was excessive, so to say the least not sure where they are coming from!! Thanks again I really appreciate your time and compassion, my dogs are like my children and I only want the best for them!

Holly i just switched vets after twelve years and my Max has major issues which i also felt after gwo years weren't be addressed. You know your little pup, just getsmhis records and move on. I know he or she is old, but you don't have to be a vet to know something is wrong. Investigate for a new vet and son't look back. I know it isn't easy but I am so happy with my new vet.

Please....trust your instincts!! If they're telling you that you need another opinion on Holly, do it. Having a consult done and changing vets saved my dog's life. Even if you don't make the change, don't hesitate to look for another opinion. I know it costs money, but it's so worth it.

That does sound like excessive weight loss...is Holly on any kind of special diet or nutritional food? Is her appetite normal? Perhaps a good supplement, change in food or diet would help her regain some weight. Another reason for a second opinion. JMHO!

meds and vets

Thank you I am looking for a new one and have a recommendation from someone but couldn't get her in on Saturday so had no choice but to go back to the old one. Just had to give her fluids for the first time wasn't pretty!! She is a biter but more than that I think she was scared. I gave my cat fluids for almost 6 months and I remember it being easier, thinking its just because it was the first time to give them to her. Poor thing, but thankfully she held her food down today first time since Thursday so with that I am extremely grateful!! Thanks again! ♥

Dawn I believe got a soft collar for Gypsy to help when she gives the fluids. You may want to look into that.

Don't use aspirin on a dog with renal failure. They are already prone to stomach ulcers which is one of the reasons they vomit. Aspirin will cause more ulcers. This is why she was changed off the Deramaxx as it has the same problem.

If you can't work with your vet please find one that you can work with. Old dogs with multiple issues need hands on eval by someone who has all the facts. It is too difficult to do over the net.

Sending prayers and good thoughts to you and Holly.
