Tully's hip replacement

So this is it. Tully is booked in for a total hip replacement of her right hip in a week.

I decided to go ahead as she didn't hold up well after our trip to Melbourne. I had to cut back the NSAIDs and she spits out the Tramadol so it didn't leave me many options.

She goes in Wed and surgery is Thurs. For the surgery there's a team of 4 vets - 2 ortho vets, anaesthesia vet (who knew they existed) and a surgical resident and it will take about 1.5 - 2hrs. Then she stays for a week. The specialist is a 4hr drive away in Sydney so I'm booking Mr D and I into a hotel so I can visit her daily - just can't leave my baby so far away all alone. Going to be difficult taking Deska but I can't find anyone to mind him.

There's a lot to get done over the week. She needs several baths and big brushes to reduce the risk of infection. I'll clip her rear parts back to make toileting easier, although the right side is being shaved by the vet. Then there's reorganising my little home for crates which she'll be in for the next 3mths. Plus all these little things for managing an immobile dog for so long. And I need to visit vet to stock up on meds because once she gets the hip done the insurance won't pay for meds.

I feel so sad and worried. She's such a perfect little dog and so trusting, this just has to work.

Caro, although we always dread the thought of surgery for one of our little ones, I think you have made absolutely the right decision for Tully and it sounds like you have an excellent set of Drs to do the job. Once past the recoup period Tully will have much better quality of life and no pain.

Sending prayers and best wishes.

We'll be sending lots of prayers your way for Tully next week, Caro. I know this is a big step and good for you for doing it. It sounds like the surgery will give Tully her mobility back and reduce her pain. Be sure to have some crate toys and games you can keep her occupied with during recuperation too for your sanity and hers. Can you put her in a x-pen at some point, or does she have to be crated all the time?

We'll be anxiously awaiting word that she's done and fine! :fl Sending you hugs. :hugs

I know this decision has been really difficult for you, but in the long run I just know Tully will thank you in her way. Hang in there--and please keep us posted on her progress. She's a strong girl, she will come through with flying colors

Sending positive thoughts for a successful surgery and recovery. It sounds like you are very organized and planning for everything. You are a very loving and brave puppy parent and I'm sure all will go well. Will keep you in my thoughts.

It'll be a tough few months for you and Tully, but if it means she'll be able to live the rest of her life without her current pain and resume most normal activities, it will be worth it. Good luck little Tully, we'll all be thinking of you!

Good Morning Miss Caro, I will keep you and your little Tully in my thoughts and prayers. It sounds like you have thought of everything to make this as easy on all of you as you can. I will pray that Tully's surgeons have calm, steady hands in the operating room and that all goes just as planned. I wish Tully a safe, speedy, successful recovery and she will once again enjoy good health. We know she will be uncomfortable for awhile, but she knows you are the best pet mommy only doing what is best for her and she loves you for that. I wish you and Tully :fl and send lots of :hugs.
