Ugh.. Cali inhaled a chicken drumstick in basically 2 pieces.. should I worry?

She has been so good lately but during her dinner tonight I gave her a raw chicken drumstick. I walked into the kitchen real quick to put the rest of the drumsticks in the fridge because the cat was sitting at my feet the whole time and I really did not want to pick them all up off the floor :) As I was walking back I heard some crunching and only saw her chewing on half of the drumstick.. As I bent down to see what she had left she chewed for a second and then swallowed the other piece whole! I guess maybe she thought I was going to take it from her so she swallowed it real fast. It was not a huge drumstick but it certainly was not small either. I know it was atleast in two pieces from what I saw so it did not go down whole. Should I be worried about it passing? About how long before it should be ready to exit her system? She went potty right before she ate at 7:00 and usually goes again before bed around 11:00 or so but I doubt it will go through her that fast. I don't know what to do! I was literally gone for 10 seconds! This is why I was so scared to feed raw bones before. I hope everything comes out ok!!! what should I do?!

The only thing she had chewed off at that point was the skin so there was still plenty of meat on the bone.. Hopefully this will guide it down with no problem into her belly to be broken down.. Anybody ever had this happen before? I am scared to death right now.. Almost to the point that I could throw up myself.. :(

Deep breaths, Mike. The danger is in cooked bones. Digestive fluids are amazingly strong. Dogs normally bolt their food, so breaking down an uncooked bone is no problem. She should be just fine. It's us humans who have to chew, chew, chew our food!

I have been googling everything I can to try and put my mind at ease.. I have a huge problem about worrying about my animals! I would never be able to forgive myself if something happened to either one of them because of me! I am sure most people are the same way about pets.. I just started to worry like crazy because I am so new to feeding RMB's!

A friend of mine recently was in a really bad car accident with his puppy in the car and the puppy did not make it out so I have been on a "be extra careful no matter what you do" kick with my babies.. I will still worry until she goes potty 2 or 3 times so I know it is all the way out. I usually will hold the bones for her to tear the meat and then while she breaks and chews them.. I guess it shows you how fast they will change on you! 10 seconds! LOL

I understand, Mike. I wake up in the middle of the night worrying about my babies. Sometimes I get frightened because I love them so much. Layla especially is my little one, and I feel so responsible for her safety and well-being.

I'm so sorry about your friend's puppy. That's my worst nightmare.

I do the same thing with my kids.. Cali is a deep sleeper and I have found myself quite a few times shaking her to wake her up and make sure she was ok because she was so deep in snooze land!

Ever since my buddy lost his pup in the accident I have not been right. I worry about her running around and hurting herself.. I start freaking out if she sneezes.. when she misses that 3rd step (that she misses every day!) I always feel her legs to make sure there is no pain.. I am going to be a mess when I have human kids!

Gio's first edible RMB experience was very similar ... Raw chicken thigh ... chomp, chomp, swallow.

It all came out fine in the end.

Don't stress, try to stay calm. I know that is useless information, it's hard not to worry.

She is acting completely normal so I am holding on so far. We just went out for a romp in the fresh snow and the little monkey knocked me right over (I slipped.. I have to blame it on someone!) and I fell in about 2 inches of nice wet snow! LOL I had to come in and change but we went right back out to run some more. She seems fine.. I know I worry too much, but isn't that what parents are supposed to do?!

You will be one of the BEST father's when that day comes. Your furkids are prepping you..lol

I would have freaked out just like you. Stomach acids are incredible though, and the bone was not cooked. If it had been cooked...then that would be a bigger concern.

One time our sheltie Nicholas ate 27 1/2 inches of a nylon lead fully intact! I had just brought him home from his double hip surgery, and he was groggy so I carried him (which was NO easy task at 45lbs!..yes..he was a huge sheltie), laid him down in his playpen and didn't want to disturb him. I know better than to leave a leash on, but he was completely OUT. Well..I left the room for a short bit, and when I came back .. I found only the part of the slip collar that goes around his neck..still on his neck with the metal ring! I looked in a panic EVERYWHERE for the rest of the lead? It was a thinner one than I use on him..the hospital had put it on him. It was NOWHERE to be found. I called the hospital, and they had me bring him back for xrays. Nothing showed up. They assured me I was over-reacting and most likely he chewed it up and it would pass fine. They warned me what danger signs to look for. Well?? Early one morning...SIX WEEKS later...poor Nicholas was sleeping next to my bed in his crate. I heard him vomit, and quickly attended to him. In the darkness, I saw something in his crate with him? It was the nylon lead, all coiled up as if it had been wrapped around your hand and bundled up...and still in one long piece! So..to this day...I completely go nuts when anything happens. A simple tweaked little paw, and I'm ready to see a surgeon. Something missing in the house, and I'm in a panic somebody ATE it! lol

Again...it's good that the bone was not cooked. I'm sure all will come out perfectly fine. Maybe a little tummy ache though?lol

Sorry to ramble. After all our efforts with his hips, we lost Nic to Lymphoma @ age 3 in 6/07, and I tend to go on and on when something sparks a memory ;-).

Mike you're just a great Daddy!

Cali is your little girl and it's natural to worry about her. I do the same with Kia and did the same with all my furkids , now at the bridge. It's the love that does it. I'm so sorry to hear about your friends Pup how horrible that experience has to have been. Is your friend hurt ? Physically I mean ? Send my sympathies out to him for his loss of his baby.
