Ups and Downs with Yogi

siiiiiiiiigh... I had my fingers crossed so tightly for little Yogi. I'm so sorry to hear that he's still having issues.

Hopefully, the colonoscopy will provide the answers needed to be able to deal with this once and for all.

Thanks everyone for your continuing support, it means a lot.:smile2:

While I am dreading Monday/Tuesday and feel guilty about having to inflict this on Yogi, I know absolutly that I am doing the right thing. Other than suggesting it could be colitis brought about by food intolerance I have not recieved a diagnosis for what is wrong and the various treatment have not worked. So far he has had this reoccuring problem five times on a variation of diets and really was showing an improvement on the raw food, so I'm not at all convinced with the food intolerance theory. If correct it would appear he is suddenly intolerant to everything having previously been able to eat even wierd things like salsa with no problems. I am getting concerned that every time this happens he is damaging himself and am worried about a rupture happening so I've got to the point where I think further investigation is an absolute necessity rather than a choice.

He's feeling loads better today :biggrin2: and I'm going to try and give him a really nice weekend to try and make up for what's going to happen next week.
The vet surgery who are doing the scope are a great practice that I used to attend with Revel when we lived closer. My auntie (with Merlin) took all her animals there too and they are one of the best in the area, so I know he's in very good and trustworthy hands.

As stressful as the waiting will be, you are doing the right thing. It is always very enlightening to get an actual diagnosis, where you can then have a real clue on what is going on and the best way to treat it. Please continue to keep us posted on Yogi. I am so sorry that you all are going through this.

I took Yogi in for admission for his colonoscopy this afternoon..
It was with a vet who has a very high reputation in this area:smile2:

Our consultation lasted very nearly an hour and he asked me to recap on the case history, then did a physical exam. He mentioned Yogi had a lowish heart rate (nothing serious) and explained about the colonocopy, but said he did not think it was the next stage, as he suspected the problems are being caused by a perinela hernia. He drew a very helpful diagram to explain it. Basically there is some muscle wastage on both (more pronounced on one) sides of the rectum and this has caused a pouch to develop into which fecal matter accumulates. When there is sufficient accumulation, Yogi tries to pass it but because it's not normal shape and very impacted, this causes difficulties and straining and sometimes blockage. He has admitted Yogi for further tests overnight and is going to have the soft tissue specialist take a look and is also testing for Addison's, just in case. Apparently perineal hernia is not uncommon in middle agd intact males, especially collies (often associated with prostate enlargement, which I don't think is the case with Yogi). As soon as he explained it, I immediatly felt he was right as it all seemed to fit with the symptoms. It can be surgically corrected so that is a relief. I will have to wait until about 3pm tomorrow to hear what is going to happen next, but for the first time this began, I acatually think we are getting somewhere.
It was horrible having to leave Yogi behined and I am thinking about him all the time, but he's quite laid back about this kind of thing so hopefully will take it in his stride. I had thought that the colonoscopy was the only diagnostic option left but now I am hopeful he will not have to endure this.
I'm feeling optimistic and worrying at the same time, which is odd and can't wait for tomorrow afternoon to come!

WOW... It's amazing that he was able to come up with a probable diagnosis so quickly. I really hope that he's on the right track and that, after a little surgery, Yogi will be back to normal. Although no surgery is really "little"... I think it's preferrable to finding out that Yogi's problem is only manageable with life-long medications and/or specialized diet, etc.

It sounds like Yogi is a pretty solid guy and I'm sure he's settled in for the evening and will be happy to see you tomorrow afternoon.

Hang in there.

Sounds as though Yogi is in thoughtful, experienced hands. This is a new one to me. Thinking about you both.

That sounds like very good news in that there is a one-time fix and no long-term impact on quality of life and no requirement for chronic treatment! Keeping my fingers crossed for you and Yogi.
