Surely, you have heard about Bacca, the cannabis-eating dog?

Came home from work and Bacca was flacked out in the backyard, staring at the clouds! Then he finally got up and wobbled his way over to me...straight to emerg!

I was much comforted by the vet who told me that when she was teenager her dog reacted exactly the same way to the "chocolate brownies"....

I'm sorry! I think I remember something about that, but I didn't know they had to pump poor Bacca's stomach. Yeowch!

Yes, my office staff still giggles about it!

Bacca would be a great drug-sniffing dog, if he would only stop eating the evidence....

The good news is that finally the pot does not seem to be coming into the house anymore. Bacca has been clean now for a couple of months - with no signs of withdrawal!

I've had three different vets. One for my cats, two for Caliber, and one for Replyka. I now just go to one. My vet now is really pro-homeopathic remedies. She will only prescribe the actual "Drugs" unless it's her absolute last resort. She doesn't do Combo shots...so Replyka had her Distemper in one shot, her Parvo in one, and of course her rabies in another, and she only gives rabies every three years, where as most vets do it once a year, which isn't really necessary. My vet bills are pretty reasonable...one time Caliber had Demodex, and Replyka had conjunctivitus, so she gave me chinese herbs for Caliber and other stuff for Replyka, and Replyka had her Parvo shot as well...so, she saw both dogs, gave me meds for two, and one shot and my bill was something like $80! Mind you I travel about 45 minutes out of town to get there...so i'm adding about $20 in gas...but it's worth it. I love the fact that she is so honest(if she doesn't know something, she won't guess - she'll send me to someone who knows more) and i can't complain about the way she handles my animals. Just recently I had to take my cat in...she's pretty sick - she had an IV, two shots in her IV, some pills to help her with vomiting, she sent me home with two bags of fluid, the tube for the IV, 7 shots of meds, needles for the IV, seringes to help with feeling, and some pills to help vomiting...and my bill was $294. All I had was $200 on me, and she said "That's fine...you can pay your balance the next time you're in!" Now, really...what vet woudl let you walk away owing almost $100?? I love her, she's great...and I wouldn't switch for a million dollars!!!

If you don't mind my asking, a few things:

1. When you say demodex are you meaning red mange?
2. If you do mean red/hereditary mange do you have pictures? Smudge has had it in the past, and I've tried finding pictures of other shelties with it with no success.
3. What did the vet give you to treat this type of mange?

Yes, another name for it is Red Mange, I believe. I unfourtunatelly do not have pictures, but the fur around his eyes was coming out quite a bit and he looked very bald in the eyes...especially on the inside of the eye. He itched at them a bit, and his eyelids became a bit pale. She gave me a Chinese Herb called "Bu Zhon Yi Qi Tang" you just give a SMALL amount(i think it was like 1/8 of a teaspoon per day) and just mix it in with their food...he loved it, it smelled pretty good! It started working after about a week of taking it!

My vet I have used for around 12 years charges $22 for office call. $50 for emergency call. If I take all 4 dogs in for check ups he waives the office call. 3 year DHPP is $30 and Rabies 3 year is $18. Heartworm test is $15. Fecal is $12 a yearly Cbc and liver function test is $45. We are always treated like family when we are in his care. He always does all treatment himself unless the pet is not stable then they go in back and the techs help but only in a real sticky siutuation. My kids really like him. Buddy even barks fr him to come back in the exam room when he has stepped out for a minute. Buddy was abused by men in his past but took to him right away! I say stick to what you feel best with...I always have people telling me he is too expensive...I think he is reasonable and I like what I pay for. I tell them if your vet works for you than you keep them and mine works for me!

Thanks! Romeo suggested that to me, but I couldn't find it locally, and I was afraid of buying the wrong thing online. Smudge was given dips, and now that it's all said and done I think the vet made the wrong call. If I had it to do all over again (I pray that I don't!) then I would go with the Interceptor treatment. I think it would be a lot less stressful than having Smudge dipped in toxic poison every two weeks.

Exactlly...it's all about feeling comfortable with what you pay for. I am more satisfied with what I pay for - even with the drive to get there!! So I don't mind at all! What you're paying for seems pretty reasonable to me!!

Smudge: No problem!! I also hope you don't have to deal with it again either. I hated when poor Caliber had it. I would highly recomend trying to have some of it shipped tho...it's great stuff!!
