Watson's Ordeal

I am happy to hear Watson is making progress, and hopefully your nerves are back together and your boyfriend is recovering.

That owner should be held liable. I am so sorry that happened to the three of
you. Its heart breaking.

He has taken the stitches out of his fingers. My finger is still numb, but you can't even seen anything on the skin anymore.

The pup I think is getting cabin fever- this is the longest he's ever gone without going somewhere with me probably since we got him. I think he's also bored because we still have towels and blankets on the floor and combine that with it probably still is sore, and he doesn't want to run around the house too fast. I could probably pick those up those, he isn't really dripping anymore.

I bought him a puzzle a wile ago and put it out for him yesterday-- he still has never figured it out, but one of the cats did and helped himself to all the tasty treats while Watson just stood and watched

Might be time to start practicing all of the commands he knows and at least get his little brain tired. I gave him a break from it for a while when it was obvious he felt really rotten... but I see no reason now to not start back up. I'll just have to use green beans for treats, he's already put a bit of weight on from having to hide so many pills in so many treats plus the periodic rice added to his food... I was afraid to cut back the kibble lest I also cut back the nutrients he needs to heal.. I'll get the weight back off as soon as we can go out and run around and we are done with all the "extras."

Glad to hear he is feeling better. If he feels good enough, try some trick training that is easy on him - other than the usual, sit, stay. Paws up (have him sit, paws up on your arm, and then progress to saying prayers). Go to sleep - lie on his good side, head down like he is playing dead. Cover up with a blanket himself if he's able. Things like this will keep him stimulated and yet not be too rough on him. Pick up toys and put away.

Easy now... that could take us MONTHS!!! I don't have one of those super brilliant shelties you guys all seem to have... here's a true story..

Picture yourself in Bar Harbor. In a small outdoor atrium, fountain bubbling, surrounded by small shops and an art gallery. Now picture a painting in the window of the art gallery... it's a large not terribly realistic painting of a bulldog. Now, picture your dog catching sight of it... your dog, being at the ocean, breaks out his loudest, sharpest bark like he believes he's back in the Shetland Islands of his ancestors. The bark reverberates against the atrium walls and as you talk to him he perks up his ears and cocks his head at you and turns his attention back to the painting in the window... barking, bowing and bouncing around. You can see the owner of the gallery through the window laughing at the debacle that is your dog. As you leave, he comes out to let you know that it was "the funniest thing he has ever seen through that window." *sighs* this is my not so brilliant sheltie.:o

Liam would do that - he's my one who takes longer to teach things to. Natalie learns too quick. Liam does out-think me.

Thank you for the laugh - I needed that visual picture this morning.

Break tricks into small steps. With paws up, when I was teaching, I had them sit, then put my arm under their legs and raised the legs, while holding a treat in the other hand. It doesn't matter how long it takes, it's just something fun to do with your dog. It's not a contest, just bonding time.

:smile2: Yeah, I know-- our bond has gotten so much stronger since we did two obedience classes and CGC. He got so much more confident in himself and in me! His wounds are all on his right side, so I've been trying to keep him on my right and I get this look like "Mom!!! What are you doing? That's not right!"

I just see him do dumb things and I just shake my head sometimes... the bulldog picture, then on the same trip, we were walking out of our hotel... it had glass doors and windows on both sides of the door... I had the door open and *clunk* nose first into the window... that move he has pulled twice. Then the look I get, his bite is super wonky, so his bottom front teeth always show, and he's had two of them pulled... good grief- all I can do is laugh at him. <3

LOL Darci, you definitely have a character on your hands! Got to love him!!!!! If he is getting cabin fever it is a sign he is definitely starting to feel better...I am really so glad he is healing without further infection now.

How are you doing emotionally? Sometimes our own emotional trauma from an attack like that can last far longer than it does for our little dog.

Sending continued good wishes and lots of hugs.

Thanks- I think I'm doing ok with it... our vet has been great, so I am passed the hand wringing phase every time I see something different with the wounds... I think they are just going through stages that I haven't dealt with before that are normal... but unexpected.

I think the hardest part is going to be when we make our first drop in visit to a group class and I can see how he's going to be with other dogs. I've not seen any red flags yet, so I am optimistic, but I know I'm going to be so stressed just driving to the place. I bought a package of turkey hot dogs that he's never had before so hopefully they will be so high value it turns out to be a great reintroduction!

Oh- yesterday was his 3rd birthday.. what a way to spend it!
