Lexi has a weird pattern of diarrhea. She has diarrhea about once every three times she poops. But, it's just at the very end of her poop. So the first part is solid and normal, and then right at the end it gets gross.

I'm trying to remember when this started, and all I can figure is that it started before she got spayed (end of April) but after she started taking her third round of antibiotics.

I thought maybe the antibiotics had wreaked havoc on her system, but now she has been off them for almost 2 weeks with no improvement.

She has been on the same food, so that's not the issue. Also, I noted in a previous thread that she has been gassy, so that may be related.

Any ideas? Is it time to go to the vet? She isn't exhibiting any other symptoms.
 
Antibiotics can take a while to clear out of the system. Antibiotics can't always determine which are good bacteria and bad bacteria - subsequently it goes after both. We find this in the people in the practice that I work in. It can take up to a year for people's GI tract to become normal again after a really strong antibiotic.

I would check with the vet, add yogurt to help (this has been discussed in other threads), and keep an eye on her.
 
My friend's dog had a similar problem. His stool was normal until the 3rd or so poop and then it was loose. Turned out he had gardia.
Unless your vet requires an exam, it wouldnt hurt to drop off a stool sample. Rule out parasites. If u do this, bring in a sample of her loose poop.

soft stool in the end means colitis/ inflammation/ of the upper parts of digestive track. Abx treatment flushes out good bacteria which needs to be brought in back, like acidophilus in yogurt type.
If you not on VP, find something similar.
You can also try slippery elm bark and marshmallow supplements from health food store, I use about 1/6 daily portion for humans for my dog, i.e. if it says take 2 caps 3 times a day I give my dog 1 caps a day, it is pretty hard to overdose on herbals anyway, they have very very wide margin mostly.
Of course, worms usually the culprit of many diarrhea problems so if it is repeated issue, you might want to check it first.
Adding pumpkin to the diet has been helpful for many.
 
Do you give her training treats at all?

I was just having a similar problem with Ginny. She'd vomited and had diarrhea on and off for a week. I couldn't figure out why and wondered if she had a bug. It got better but she continued to have diarrhea at the end of her stool. I realized the only change was the training treats I was giving her, so I switched.

My vet told me that its normal for a stool to be soft at the end. But if its consistently more than slightly soft I'd talk to a vet and bring in a stool sample.
 
Thanks for all the advice. I think I will start by taking a stool sample to the vet to rule out any infection/parasite. Then, I'll switch from the treats we're using to boiled chicken. That way if it continues I can rule that out as a cause.

I do plan on putting her on a supplement like VP, but wasn't sure which formula to use. I would do the Canine Athlete since she's starting agility, but I think she may be too young for it (glucosamine, etc...). She's only 7 months. Any recommendations on that?

For treats I started using boiled chicken hotdogs cut up into tiny pieces. This totally ended the diarrhea.

I don't feed supplements myself, but yogurt is very good for the digestive system. I personally love astro biobest plain.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you should give supplements till they're over a year old at least.
 
I am giving Che and Sammy Show formula since they are 7 and half month old.
I like VP very much and my furry pups have gorgeous silky glistening hair, everyone comments on it, not that Che has much of his coat now but what he has looks terrific, my human kids/ both girls, getting envious LOL/. There are few other supplements that similar to VP but you have to combine them to get the same formula so VP ends up being the winner.
Threats inadvertently could be the culprit of many digestive upsets as they could be too fatty or salty or something else present in them. I stay with kibble for regular low reward ones, organic turkey hot dogs and string cheese for high reward. I also use homemade liver treats.
When it comes to chicken I would only use free range one- the cheap one has been fed too much of antibiotics all their life, so too much chemistry left in that meat.... but that is me and I am vegetarian for that reason...:smile2:
regarding stool being soft... I consider stool normal if it is very firm to start with and it might get soft but formed on the end. Stool that starts firm and gets too liquidy consistency that you unable to pick from the grass is diarrhea in my opinion and deserves to be investigated if repeated pattern.
 
Trapp was switched to Joint & Muscle,as Earnhardt needed to be on something.They were both previously on show dog formula,which is "skin & coat"

If I am not mistaken..if I understood Lee correctly,that joint & muscle has rhe added nutriants for healthy joints & muscles,but it is also a combination of show formula (skin & coat)

Trapp has been on VP since he turned 5 months old.We get compliments all the time on his beautiful coat.

Jasper is finishing up the jar of feline formula.It is the same as show dog formula,but instead it has an added feature of chicken in it to entice a cat.Unfortuneately Bumper will have no part of it.Lee was so very gracious,and sent a jar to us free of charge back some time ago. When we told him of Bumper,and we thought she would benefit from VP. Being blind has only amplified her sense of smell,so she was having no part of her food,with VP.

When we learned that Bumper would not even nibble her food with the VP over it,I called Lee and told him I would send it back.Well he told me to keep it,and offer it to the puppers,that it would not hurt them one bit. We talked extensively about a liquid form for felines,and he said it was something they were thinking about,maybe for future testing.
