What age to nueter (approx)

Both my boys were "done" around 11 months or so. I had a reason for delaying, but honestly can't remember what it was - there was a thread on it - it might have had something to do with their fur coming in thicker, or reduced threat of cancer later on????:confused2::o (Senility strikes again!).

It made no difference to the craziness. They were nuts before and their nuts now.

In my area, they do it at 6 months for both girls and boys. A female puppy can go into heat as early as 6 months. If you want to eliminate any chance of breast cancer, then you want to get her spayed before she goes into heat. You can always ask your breeder when her mom and grandma had their first heat.

I just did Bailey's and she is turning 7 months. I would've done it earlier, but she had some girly issues and we thought she was going to have to have one heat. Her breeder said her mom and grandmothers had their first heat between 8 & 9 months.

Nuts without the nuts!! Ha ha, woo hoo, did I just say that??
 
A few weeks ago at her last visit the Vet noted part of her "tuilp" was ever so slightly inverted. Someone here said to consider letting her go into one heat so that as she swells, the vulva will stay out more, THEN get her spayed?!?!
 
Most dogs are spayed and neutered around 5-6 months. Old enough to have all the organs developed and young enough that the hormones have started to surge. Yes spaying a girl before the first heat almost eliminates the chance of breast cancer later.

The anesthesia is better today than say 15 yrs ago so some vets are doing it younger at 8-10 wks. I don't recommend this at all. The risks are still higher, there is a higher chance of urinary incontinence in girls and there are some possible orthopedic problems being reported later in life.

Some are now suggesting that if your dog is going to do agility or obedience that you should wait until 12-14months until the growth plates are closed or they will get tall and increase risk of cruciate injuries.

All I can say is that for most clients heat cycles are a pain to deal with and most clients have a hard time dealing with hormonal boys. SO 6 months works for most.

I wondered if someone was going to pick up on that after I typed and sent it! It was subliminal, I think.....I wasn't really thinking about THAT, until it was too late!

Yup that's what I thought Bailey had, but the vet said hers was just small. I got a second opinion. I didn't want to spay her and then it turned out she would've benefited from one heat. The second vet agreed. Her "tulip" lol wasn't inverted, so spaying her now or waiting wouldn't make a difference.

Does your puppy have vaginitis or chronic UTI's? That's the only affect I know from an inverted vulva. They pool urine and it causes infection. if you're puppy is not getting any infections from it, then speak to your vet and see what he(or she) recommends.
