I figured I'd ask the board since I'm sure between us all, we can cover most of the breeds.
My boss wants to get a dog. He's always had labs and loves labs, but since him and his wife are getting older, the rule of course is, "get a dog that you can carry to the vet". When his dog got sick, my boss was out of the country and his wife couldn't carry their 60lb dog.
He says he's looking 30-40lbs, but not sure if that's small enough or what. So I'd say up to 40lbs. Obviously, he wishes he could just have a small lab, but those are hard to come by.
I suggested a Sheltie, of course, being the good Sheltie person, but they don't want to upkeep the fur (I don't think it's that much upkeep, but okay). So, no dogs that require lots or constant grooming. He loves labs, so think of a dog with that disposition (sweet, loveable, smart - well, some are, playful, good family dog, etc).
Oh, and a dog that would be good around children. His daughters don't have kids, but I'm sure they will one day.
At one time I suggested a Toller (but they may be too big). He fell in love with a Brittany, but again, I think his wife said too big. They thought Jack Russell, but too neurotic/hyper. You get the point.
Any suggestions would be great, since I'm at a loss.
