What breed would complement an active Sheltie?

I'm considering bringing another puppy into the house this summer.

Our current two-year-old Sheltie is extremely active and loves to play. Ideally, I'd like a second dog that will complement Lily rather than raise her activity level to new heights.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dog that would love to play with Lily but perhaps help her mellow-out a bit in the evening?

I've been considering a King Charles spaniel (because they're supposed to have a sweet disposition).
 
Search for my thread about a Cav -- I learned a lot about them via that thread. I think it was entitled Anyone Have Experience With A Cav? Not that long enough, probably in general dog chat thread.
 
What size dog?

I would be cautious of Cav's. I love them but they tend to have a lot if health issues due primarily to over breeding.

Personally, I would consider a mini or standard poodle. Extremely smart, medium activity lever, highly trainable. But again, pick your breeder carefully.

An oversize one would probably be a bit calmer and more tractable. Or you could try a Corgi. Or, as that old cowboy song goes, "Get a long little doggie," which in my youth I thought was referring to a Dachshund.

Lily is our third Sheltie. Compared to the first two, Lily is incredibly active and energetic. Keeping up with her can be daunting.

I thought bringing in a calmer playmate that would not add too much additional excitement to the house would be better for all. The Cavalier thread you pointed me to was helpful. They are such sweet-tempered dogs, but maybe Lily's activity level would be too much for a Cavalier. (Additionally, the health issues are a worry). I know Lily gets bored. She herds the cat relentlessly. I know she needs a lot more exercise.

Our neighbor/s Sheltie mix has a second litter of puppies. They're a blend of Sheltie and Australian shepherd. I really hesitate to commit to another herding dog for a playmate especially one that I might buy just to help my neighbor find good homes for the puppies.
 
I doubt a cav would find a sheltie too much. Of all the Cavs I know my high energy females sometimes finds the Cavs too energetic!
 
Standard Poodles are as sickly as Cavaliers. Wouldn't have one if someone gave it to me.

Collies are always good. I have one, and she is incredibly calm. I call her "Champion Katie on the Couch" for a reason.
