What breeds do Shelties get along with?

All great suggestions I would vote for the belgium or the standard Poodle, or the collie...My aunt has goldens and my moms best friend breeds them...those are some high strung goofy arent aware of their size breed and would worry about them with a sheltie. even my brothers labs are large goof balls unaware of their size!!

I'd go for any of these, so would my partner (with the exception of the poodle...! he was against that when our breeder recommended it). Our family had a poodle X when I was young and she was so sweet and gentle.

Good news about belgian shepherds, we like these! And goldens. Although I understand we'd have to go for a petite version of a bigger dog, for Howard's sake.

What do all you sheltie lovers think about rough collies? Do they have a much different temperament? They certainly look amazing, no surprises there! :biggrin2:

In fact all collies look gorgeous to me. We're trying to get Howard to meet as many different dogs on the beach to see who he clicks best with. The little fella is sitting on my lap now demanding I go make his dinner... so I'll be off!
 
When I have talked to collie owners many of them have said collies are a lot like shelties - but without the weirdness :biggrin2: They are difinately not as quirky, or as bossy in nature as shelties. They are pretty much all sweetness through and through, but are not as "quick" mentally - although certainly not stupid, some people say they learn a little bit slower than shelties.

The young dogs are very playful, but not aggressive or clumsy about it. They are good natured, and generally get along with other dogs of different sizes.

I have known collies to get along with even smaller breeds like poms.
 
I've found that most of Sadie's best friends all are mixes of herding breeds. Because they have similar instincts they seem to all play in a similar way. Sadie also has friends who are golden retrievers, a coca-poo and a German Shepard.

I agree with what was said about GS earlier, as well as a number of other big, dominant breeds. They can do well with a family that knows how to handle them and control the dominance. With the proper handling GS in particular can be very gentle with young children and smaller dogs. Sadie's GS friend is and un-neutered male who is huge and absolutely beautiful. He's been nothing but gentle with her.

A family member also has an un-neutered rottweiler that is highly trained and nothing but gentle with her. Boy does he know his place! He has the best manners of any dog I've seen both with people and other dogs. I wouldn't hesitate to trust him around small children. It was amazing to watch as he lied down to let Sadie be bigger than him, then he let her climb all over him and chew on his ears. He played back but was so gentle about it, he'd roll over and expose his belly to her. Was like watching the lion with the lamb, Max at 150 lbs. (at least) playing with 20 lb. Sadie :smile2:
 
We're involved in Collie Rescue, so we sometimes foster. My girls get along well with all the Collies. Annie Laurie likes Maddie the Boxer next door.
 
Actually, I had a rottweiler for a short time, when I had my 3 shelties. It was funny because I had 2 shelties, then my daughter wanted the rottweiler and we got her, then we got the 3rd sheltie puppy. The 2 older shelties were snotty to the rottweiler and the new sheltie puppy, but the rottweiler was older than the puppy, and she took care of the new sheltie puppy. I was very careful to be sure the rottweiler's whole family was at the breeders and they were all gentle and gave kisses. Only problem was that I was disabled and the rottweiler was pretty stupid. I could not house break her, or even train her to get off the couch. It took me and my foster-daughter to drag her off the couch (we'd lay there catching our breath and she would be back on the couch before we were). I found a good home for her with another rottweiler in a some fenced acreage. If the two of you could handle a rottweiler, it could be very good for your sheltie. That rottweiler was sooo gentle with the sheltie pup.
 
I had jasper out on a walk today and he befriended EVERY and i mean EVERY pit bull he saw.. and there were like.. i wanna say 20... it was like national pitbull day and i didnt get the memo... one i thought was going to eat Jasper.. he had that look like.. SNACK! lol
