What is your take on Rabies Shot

Why do breeders want you to wait until the pups are one year old to have the rabies vaccine, while the vet says it's ok to do anytime after the pup is 3 months old? Vet said no problem. Did you wait?

My breeder had it in the contract to not combine the rabies with other shots and he had to be 4 months...guess breeders have different ideas as to what is right.

No idea, but rabies is required by law at a certain age based on the laws of your state and city and breeders can not make you break the law. There is not anywhere that I am aware that does not require rabies to be giving by 6 months at the oldest. Many places require it after 3 months.

Our vet suggested no other shots at the same time because of sheltie sensitivities and they were pretty small after all. However they were both given their rabies shots before they were six months old. The last of their puppy shots would have been at four months or so.

Like I said the only stipulation suggested was that they not be given any other shots at the same time as the rabies shot. The vet just wanted to make sure they did not have issues from multiple vaccines.

Our vets give first rabies shot anytime after 4 months...but it is a different shot first time...it is only good for one year. After that the ravbies shot they administer is good for 3 years. And no matter whether a dog is a pup or an adult, they never give more than one vaccine at a time...at least 2 weeks wait between different vaccines.

I wouldn't say "breeders" as this implies that most breeders require this which is far from the truth.

It is required at 4 months of age here, whether I or my puppy buyers like it or not. And I'm not sure how it works in other states, but if there is some kind of hiccup along the line of rabies shots and your dog bites someone, they will be quarantined for a very long time (I think a year) or put to sleep.

By 6 months it has to be given here. Can't do dog class, dog parks, hotels etc otherwise. Mine both got theirs when they were 4 months.

Hello! I called 4 different breeders in California and they all said, wait until the dog is a year if you can. I have had all of the other shots done yet I'm still allowed to have my boy (who is now 5 months old) take puppy training classes at a nationally known pet store.

My vet is fine with waiting, and she mentioned where I could NOT take the pup. I'm not going to wait out the year, will have it done when he has his "pockets picked". Then goes in the micro-chip and if appropriate, the rabies shot.

Believe me, it was just as much of a shock to me! Dog parks around here....some sicko has been throwing poisoned treats there at night, so far, 6 dogs have died. I'll just stay home and cuddle him!
