What is your take on Rabies Shot

It looks to me as if the veterinary profession is really getting wise to the dangers of overvaccination, which is to their credit, since vaccination is supposedly such a big part of their revenue. I wish I could give the same credit to the human medical profession.

I wouldn't vaccinate a dog while under anesthesia. The body can only handle so much, and anesthesia is kind of a big deal, and so is Rabies. 6 months is more than fine. I would be seriously wondering about a group of breeders producing dogs that can't handle an immune challenge until a year old...

No, I would never give the rabies shot under anesthesia, I just meant after he had healed from the neutering. My vet is very wise for her years, she said that she's more than happy if we want to wait....she puts priority over the City of San Jose, all they want is the dollar when I am perfectly fine without going to dog parks and boarding facilities.

I have really learned my lesson on this, forgive me the following, I am terminally ill with Lupus and what docs say is not always what I follow! For now he is my comforting lap pup and won't be going many places.

The vaccine schedule I give to my puppy people is:

8 weeks DAPP, well puppy vet visit with my vet. Health signed off by him

12 weeks DAPP

16 weeks DAPP

18-20 weeks rabies vaccine

NO Lepto or Coronavirus. Just the core vaccines as per Dr. Schultz and Dr. Dodd.
 
I always got my dogs rabies shots when they were due when I lived in the states. Over here in New Zealand, they do not give them, they do not have rabies, so, I do not have to worry, but, if I took Laddie overseas to my home, he would have to get the shot, and when he came back to NZ with me, he would then be in quarantine, seems like New Zealand is pretty pure regarding dog illnesses, that makes it nice.:smile2:
 
I am as conservative as they come but not concerning rabies. Not keeping your pet current on rabies or not vaccinating at 16 weeks (in MD) puts your pet at risk and your family.

All kinds of freaky stuff can happen, like a bat getting in your house and biting your only- in- the- house -pet or your puppy going outside to pee and a rabid skunk attacking it in the backyard. Or a rabid raccoon drops out of a tree into your fenced yard and your dogs goes over to check it out and maybe gets bitten but you aren't sure and your dog is past due for rabies and now you have to quarantine your dog for forever or euthanize it , or worse, the dog mouths your toddler's hand and you have to start her on a painful series of shots and they have to euthanize your pet and decapitate it and send the head away to be tested.

I understand the concerns for vaccines, and hopefully there will be some reforms where needed but until then follow the required laws in your area so you don't wind up with a heartbreaking situation. It is very hard to see young healthy pets put down because they aren't current with rabies vx and because they MIGHT have come in contact with a rabid animal. Rabies is a deadly disease and kills many people annually. It isn't a great way to go either.

I follow the same, except I usually do Rabies right around 5 months (even though my state has an asinine law of it must be done at 3 months)..
Also I tell puppy buyers to wait, till then and dont have other shots done with Rabies.
