I thought it would be interesting to start a poll of what medications we use to treat our shelties for fleas and ticks.

If you choose "Other", please explain.

Please note that I've made this a public poll, so its possible to see who voted by clicking on the number. I thought this might be helpful since often different products work in some areas of the world but not others. This way if a member who votes also displays their location, we may be able to get a better idea of what works where.

I voted Comfortis. I live in hot, humid Arkansas. I was using Advantage when I had a problem with tapeworms. Switched to Comfortis and never had another problem with fleas or tapeworms.

Also, nothing like making your dog do a treat for their medicine. Fluffy and Smudge shove each other out of the way to do their sits first to see who gets the "treat" first.

Haha, my dogs are like that with their heartworm medication. I give it as a 'reward' after applying topical flea medication.

I voted for Advantage... but that's for the cat :wink2: I haven't actually made a choice for Miko yet, so I'm looking forward to seeing the results of this poll.

That's why I thought this topic would make for a GREAT poll.:smile2: There are several threads on preventatives but no polls that I know of.

I would also like to add that I use Sentinel, too. Fluffy gets Sentinel and Comfortis. I don't trust that Sentinel kills fleas by itself. :rolleyes2:

I've never used either one so don't know anything about them, but isn't it bad to use two at the same time? Or is this recommended by your vet?

I've never heard of doing this for fleas, I just want to be properly educated. :smile2:

Sentinel is a heartworm medicine, but it says it kills flea eggs. Not adult fleas. So I wouldn't trust it as a flea medicine. I don't use it as a flea medicine, but I do use it for Fluffy's heartworm pill. My vet says it's safe to give Comfortis/Sentinel.

I wasn't sure what to check. Up until a month ago, I had been using Frontline Plus, but it seems the fleas don't care. I switched to K9 Advantix. However, it seems that may not be working either (found 3 fleas after a trial weekend on Koji, nothing on Miko. It's very weird how only Koji gets them).

At this point, I'm very frustrated.
