Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I don't think a lot of people realize how different all of the different preventatives are, like some killing only flea eggs, while other kill only adults, others do multiple things, etc.

It really pays to do your home work. :yes:

I was really quite mad when I first bought Sentinel. I thought I was going to save money, because the vet told me it killed fleas.

I found on the forum where somebody was talking about Sentinel, and I started a thread asking if it killed fleas. Flipped the box over and come to find out it was only flea eggs. :rolleyes2: I was not happy. Other people say that their Sentinel is way higher than their Interceptor, but mine isn't that much of a price difference. Smudge is on Interceptor and Fluff is on Sentinel. Both get Comfortis.

I've only had to deal with a "flea issue" once - this summer when I had one of Mom's dogs staying with me. It was mid-August and one morning I was rubbing her ears... only to feel... flea dirt. :eek2: Oh eew eew eew!

We've never (knock on wood!) had fleas up at the house in CT. But down here, I live in a tract complex that has lots of dogs... and lots and LOTS of roaming cats. So I was probably lucky that it took as long as it did for me to encounter fleas. Luckily, Markie never got them.

So: after freaking out (and lots of googling, and calling my mother), I got Frontline Plus from the local Petco. Oh, and scrubbed Borax into all the rugs and vacuumed like a crazy lady (I so did NOT want any kind of infestation... and I was really worried that my pet rats would get the fleas, as they're trickier to treat). I was also careful about isolating Daisy (the dog) in her crate for a day or two after the treatment - I felt bad about it, but I wanted to keep any bugs as contained as possible. (We took extra-long walks and hung out on the porch to compensate.)

I think it really took two monthly doses to really knock them out. I never found any fleas in the house (even tried the plate-of-soapy-water-under-a-light-at-night trick), but I did find another flea and some dirt on the pooch about three weeks after the first treatment. I freaked again and washed her from nose to tail-tip in Dawn dish-soap and combed her really well, then did the second treatment a week later. After that, I never saw another flea (or found anymore dirt).

She went back to Mom's house in October, a few days after her last treatment. I haven't heard any reports, so it seems like the repeated applications of Frontline Plus (and the dish soap, and the crating, and the vacuuming, and the borax) worked.
 
we had been using Frontline/Frontline Plus a few years ago but it seemed that they didn't dent the fleas at that point in time. so we switched to Comfortis. I don't give it to them all the time- just when they are going to be places where they might pick up some fleas. Callie had fleas back when I first got her and then she and Happy had some one summer but we've not had much problems recently but we have the pills on hand so they can get them right away if they need to :smile2:
 
Here in the tick capital of the world, my vet tells me that Advantix works best on ticks. I use Nature's Defense on Pixie and Barkley and Frontline on Checkers since she gets bathed so much for shows, but I'm switching she and Barkley to Advantix after this week. (I can't switch Pixie because of her seizures, so she'll stay on the natural med).

I was grooming the dogs on Monday after taking a deer tick off Checkers right over her eye and brushed two out of her coat and one out of Pixie! They were so tiny I thought they were specks of dirt. Thank heaven I had a white towel on the grooming table or I never would have seen them. There was another on Barkley yesterday. This is the worst fall for ticks I have ever seen.
 
I have been using frontline, not that it seems to be helping any :mad: Never again will I take in a stray cat, unless it gets bathed and flea treated somewhere other than my house!! Between the stray cat and the puppy that was brought back, I have been fighting fleas and tapeworm almost all summer long!
 
I think next season I'll be switching to K9 Advantix, but am still considering Revolution. Frontline Plus isn't available in Canada and this past season it was just too big a pain to get my hands on, although it worked well for fleas. We didn't do the hiking this year that we usually do so I never saw any ticks.
 
Advantix vs Generic?

I've been pricing Advantix -- wow, can you say expensive! I wondered if anyone has tried the generic Advantix offered on some sites for half the price. The ingredients listed are exactly the same as the brand.

I also use Sentinel. I just call it birth control for fleas. That's how it was explained to me. I used to use it and then use Advantage if I ever saw a flea (this was back when I only had Miko and he didn't go out into the real world as much).

BTW, I just bought 3 packs of Capstar, sigh, wish it wasn't so expensive though. I'm going to give it to Koji only for trials, since he seems to be the only one getting fleas. Strange.

Nowdays, with the agility trials being all over the place, I'm covering all my bases.
