Whither Flea & Tick Meds for Shelties?

I was using Revolution and no issues with the dogs. We switched to K9 Advantix at the vet's recommendation when she found a tick next to Bacca's eye (it was coincidence that we went to the vet the day after coming home from the cottage). Neither pup had any reaction to that either.

K9 is toxic to cats though, so it you have cats, its a non-starter.

While I hate to use meds and chemicals, I would rather be safe than sorry. Ann's case is unique in that her pup just can't handle anything stronger than holistic remedies, so she was able to find a reasonable option.

I have friends who use Advantix and have had great success with it. I think I asked my vet about it once and she said that she did not recommend it because of the high instance of dogs contracting heart worm while on it, despite the fact that it supposed to protect against it.

I'll ask her again this weekend when I take Ginny for her shots.

Vicky & I wanted to thank everyone who commented as well as everyone from Sheltie Nation who commented on their own experiences with flea & tick meds.

I’ve been hearing very good things about Revolution and Advantage Multi. I’m speaking with Kiyomi’s veterinarian tomorrow at 9am, so I’ll ask her recommendation. Based on the general consensus here and on Sheltie Nation, we’ll likely go with Revolution, Advantage, or Frontline based on her veterinarian’s recommendation. Mary Galloway is also a longtime Sheltie breeder and veterinarian for Jade Mist Shelties in MD, so we’ll be comfortable with her recommendation.

Revolution or Advantage sound ideal.

I used to use Frontline Plus, but it has not been working recently. I believe I've run into fleas that are now resistant to frontline... so, after speaking with my vet, started them on Vectra 3D. I'm happy with the results I'm getting using it.
As I've said before, I have eight shelties. Every spring, summer, and fall, my shelties have worn frontline, and now vectra, and I have never had any trouble... no seizures, no burning, no adverse affects.
I know of people who would rather leave the fleas on than treat their dog with chemicals, however, I have to believe that the fleas are no better for the dogs health than the chemicals. Not to mention the fleas make the dogs, and ME miserable. So, I choose to treat my dogs for their health and happiness.

I agree Stacey! I have never hesitated using them. I would recommend that each new pup owner start with the tried and true, and be watchful for signs of reaction.

The only caveat would be if your pup had some kind of chemo reaction to it. If that were to happen, then I would be looking at alternatives.

I got mixed up, my friends don't use Advantix, they use Revolution.

I spoke to my vet today and she does not recommend Revolution because there have been many dogs that have still gotten heart worms while on it (it treats heart worms as well as fleas and ticks). In our area she said that Frontline Plus works well for fleas and ticks.

Our vet said the same thing,but he feels it is because of improper applications.It is very important,and he said especially with breeds that have a double coat,the solution must be put way down in,on the skin. He thinks that some people were not doing this correctly.
And thus these few double coated breeds did have a positive heartworm test returned.

Both of our babes are on Advantage Multi,and with no problems.

I use the flea pill, BUT the new vet gave me the Advantage Multi for...demodex mites! :biggrin2: Demodex mites = mange! He said he really liked that product. I was told that overseas it was actually sold as a medicine for demodex. I'm talking about the ingredient that makes the Advantage Multi effective, but I can't remember the name.

Since I forgot to buy the flea pill I put the Advantage Multi on him for this month. I am going to continue to use the flea pill, but the Advantage Mutli got the go ahead from my new vet. :biggrin2: Mange mites don't go away overnight so I'm thinking if it's used as a demodex mite killer it's got to be one heck of a flea medicine! For me, I just feel that the flea pill is idiot proof. I'm always afraid I don't put the Advantage on right, or that it will get washed off, ect.

I think a very good choice for Smudge. Mites can be an issue,with any dog or cat. My sister called me yesterday (new dog owner) and she said her dog's ears stink..I told her it was in all probability,the pup had ear mites.

I'm very happy with the product,and will continue using it. I hope Smudge does well also.He's such a sweet pup,and we all want him to stay well~
