I hope it's not mites, but that's kind of funny. I've never stopped to smell the dog ears before.

Her dog's ears stink?
I hope it's not mites, but that's kind of funny. I've never stopped to smell the dog ears before.If they have ear mites,they will have an oder.Especially a bad case of them.
When we took in Kasey,a chocolate lab we found roaming in town,it was on the weekend,and couldnot get her to be checked or scannedfor micro chip until monday,she had such a case a ear oder we could not hardly stand it.
So I cleaned them well with some warm soapy water,and applied some warmed olive oil till Monday. I had read that tip online one time,and it worked well.

We use Comfortis. I have worked in an animal hospital for years and this is the best product so far. Revolution and Advantage Multi aren't recommended for Shelties, or any dog related to the breed due to the Ivermectin.
We use Comfortis for fleas and Interceptor for heartworm prevention. K9 Advantix does NOT protect against Heartworms, although it states that it repels mosquitoes. Even if your Sheltie is on K9 Advantix they do need to be on a Heartworm prevention as well.
Frontline isn't working as well as it use to, and in most places Comfortis is very well priced and is very affordable (when compared to Frontline, K9 Advantix, Advantage, etc..)

I spoke to my vet recently about flea and tick medications. Her feeling is that we should use the least amount of chemicals on our dogs that we can, which I agree with 100%.
Every area is different, but she found this works for our area (southern ontario):
Assuming there are no fleas already in your house, nothing from November/December to the end of March since fleas can't typically survive the cold, unless they're living in your house.
From April to June, Frontline Plus for flea and tick control. The ticks here don't seem to bite too much after June, only in the cool, damp weather.
From June to Septmember, Advantage for fleas. She feels that Advantage is less harsh and should therefore be used in place of Frontline Plus if ticks aren't an issue.
From September to November, Frontline Plus if ticks become a problem. If not, Advantage for fleas. I haven't found a tick on Sadie since May/June. Fleas have been a big problem, which Advantage has helped tremendously.
There is one problem here though: Frontline and Frontline Plus are not available in Canada. Not sure yet how I'm going to get it for next year, I'll either order it online or have to make a trip over the border to get it. I'm told that Target sells it now.

I forgot to get the flea pill this month so I went ahead and used the Advantage stuff again. After using the flea pill I HATE flea medicine that you apply to their fur.He squiggles, wiggles, and jiggles!
Sadie is pretty good about standing still, but ever since using the all natural flea medicine, she gets very anxious when I apply the topical stuff. Even though Advantage barely smells, she paces the house for a couple of hours afterward. If I ever had any doubts about discontinuing its use, I don't now. I hope Sadie eventually forgets about it, I feel so bad for her
And yes, dogs and cats with ear mites can have VERY stinky ears.
