Noah was a barker when he was outside, protecting the yeard from the cats and those terrible squirrels, who liked to tease him. He didn't bark much in the bouse unless Mom was taking her pills, the windows were being shut, if someone came to the door. Hamish would bark at me when I came in from work, telling me all about his day. He was a howler when he was left on his own.

Now, Emma - I didn't think for the longest time that she would bark. She must have been close to 7 months before she really barked and it was such a tiny squeaky bark, almost as if she was afraid to bark and it scared her. Last night, she was barking at Mr. Rabbit in the yard because he was on HER property. Not a lot of barking but enough that I made her hush. She is also starting to bark at the stray cats.

bark champion I guess

Ok it seems like my pup (16 months) is the champion. She barks MOST of the time! She was pretty quiet as a pup. We got her at 8 weeks and she only really barked when she saw a car go past. NOW SHE BARKS AT MOST EVERYTHING! In the morning we let her out, she barks to awaken the neighbors (and their dogs). She barks at sirens (live in city)! When we go for a walk she barks at anything moving (cat, car, airplane, bird ...you know anything!) If the TV is on she barks at every other commercial and Lord help us if we watch a ball game. Beccause I think she beleives the ball is for her to play with. I am very uncomfortable taking her around other dogs (aggressively barks) but loves to play with them. At night she has another final bark fest with the neighbor dogs (saying goodnight I guess!) And of course she flips out at the doorbell, trash trucks (twice a week), and the mailman (daily). I did get her to STOP barking at the hair dryer and she is better with the vacumm now. When she was a bit younger I tried to teach her the "bark" command so I could get her to learn the "quiet" command. I think that may have made it worse. I am quite annoyed by it all and most frustrated!

Dusty has had time out for anything resembling a bark since I got her at 5 months.

Dusty ( 15 months ) is just beginning to bark whenever anyone comes to the door/ arrives home.

But she is only allowed ONE bark. At the second she gets time out.

Use a low growly voice to say "No Barking, Baaaaad dog, no Barking - Time out! Make sure you don't use a loud yelling "Barking" voice yourself.

Yogi is a real barker and his breeder texted me when he was 3 weeks old to say he had barked his first bark. His line do tend to be barkers. Unfortunately it rubbed off on Revel too. I read somewhere that if you shout they think you’re joining in but if you whisper they have to shut up to hear what your saying and it works…to an extent if you can do a loud enough whisper to get their attention in the first place.

Bacca didn't really bark much until Indy showed up on the scene. Indy was a non-stop yapper since the day I brought him home at 10 months. Now Bacca will bark along with him while they chase David and the lawnmower.

The difference is Indy's bark is shrill and goes right down your spine, whereas Bacca's is more a deep throated "ruff". Not nearly as annoying!

Funny how you can pick your dogs bark out. A couple weeks ago at an agilty trial we had to crate the dogs around the side of a indoor soccer field . It had wood sides so we couldn't see them. I'm sitting there and suddenly I hear a single bark, pause bark, pause on it goes and think that sounds like Ember. Sure enough, it was Ember. 200+ dogs half of which were shelties and I could pick out her bark 30ft away.

That's a perfect description of Ginny's bark. Thankfully, she's only yappy when she's REALLY excited and we're usually able to keep her excitement levels to a tolerable level.

I think barks may be genetic. Years ago, I was vacationing in a city about 200 miles from home. I was walking along the lakeshore, and I heard a dog bark. OMG! I thought! What on earth is Timber doing here? I'd left him at home! I look around and I see a Sheltie trotting along. I approach the owner and ask her where she got her dog. Yep - Laureate Shelties...our pups were related, and apparently even sounded the same.

Have any of you noticed that depending on the circumstances, the barks are different? I know Noah had a bark if somethine upset him, one if someone came to the door after dark, one for people he knew, one for the squirrels, etc. Emma is becoming the same. It is as if they are saying "Listen to me and learn what my bark means. Learn the one that means danger and be aware.
