There was some great grooming videos in another part of this section that recommended shaving the middle belly area as you have to help cool the dog down when they lay down. Sounds like you did the right thing and had the right idea!

Only use rubbing alcohol in a dog's ear if necessary because it dries the skin excessively and can make the ears sensitive. Imagine chapped lips.. baby oil is a safe alternative for cleaning ears as well as the normal ear cleaners. Also use soft cotton gauze or wipes but never use cotton swabs...
