Adopting our First Sheltie

Hi, I'm Jan and (weather permitting!) I am driving to NJ on Saturday to adopt Molly a beautiful young Sheltie in need of a forever home!

We're experienced dog owners, and recently grieved the passing of Maggie our very special border collie mix. Molly, we are told is a Sheltie with a border collie personality!

I'm very much looking forward to learning about Shelties!

My first question is about collars. Molly's foster mom recommends we keep her on her slip chain so she can't back out of her collar if she gets frightened or rambunctious during a walk. I absolutely want her to be safe, that is my first priority, but I'm not a big fan of choke collars. Does any one have a recommendation?? Martingale collar or Martingale half-check collar.....or is it best to stay with the slip chain?

Thanks so much for any suggestions or stories that might help me decide.

Congratulations! And welcome to Sheltie Nation.

I have had many scared puppy mill foster Shelties over the years. I put them in Martingale collars (make sure it is tight enough that she cannot slip out of it). I haven't yet had one get loose from their collars.

Thanks. I've always liked the Martingale collars. Once Molly arrives home I can evaluate how she behaves on lead, then hopefully I'll be able to choose the right collar for her. Just wanted to know that ppl have not had problems with Shelties being able to back out of the Martingales.

Not exactly sure how to embed a photo of Molly...I see that in the posting rules at the bottom of my screen it says that img code is OFF....also it looks like I would have to host the image on a file share and then use that url...is that correct?

Anyway I hope these links to my facebook page work so you can see her!

She's beautiful and looks quite a bit like my Dickens. Do you know where she came from originally?
