Breeding Questions

Five years? Man am I slow. Took me ten years to get to where I thought I understood enough to have a litter. Ten years, lots of seminars, lots of questions, and some obedience and agility titles before I was brave enough.

I applaud you for this! I know for myself that I'm definitely not ready to do it "all by myself" (from the planning to the actual whelping)... I feel like I've learned a lot on the benefit of growing up surrounded by dogs and dog-people, but I have a long way to go, and the breeding program is under my mother's direction, which is how it should be. (And even my mother consults her mentors when she's making the big decisions. You never, ever stop learning.)

This is all great advice.

Breeding is not for the faint at heart and should never be undertaken lightly. It is a huge commitment and a huge time consumer.

Personally, I would not recommend it, if you are working full-time to support yourself, unless you have assistance somewhere else. You just can't devote yourself to the pups and to the breeding program in the evening hours alone.

I'm curious about Sunny's pedigree though. It could be that you have a great pup and maybe you can look at co-breeding/owning as an option, to ease your way into this. Finding a great mentor is the best starting point. Bacca's breeder worked very closely with Kim at Laureate's when she first started out.

I have her pedigree and it goes back four generations. I was looking at it last night and I was curious about how I am supposed to tell if she is "special" according to the AKC? It would be a plus since I want to run her for agility before I breed her (believe me she runs fast). Is there a way I can tell?

Some of her ancestors have this *with AKC DNA thing under them with a vin number or something.

Not sure what you mean by "special" in the pedigree. But normally you want to see atleast a good amount of CH's in the pedigree as it shows they atleast conform to breed standard and are a good representation of the breed. Generally I am a bit more forgiving with the Dam not being a Ch since it is tough to campaign them between being in season, out of coat, whelping, loss of coat...etc. I find you end up with very little time actually showing them where they are competitive!
This is one of my girls pedigree which shows the CH and ROMshttp://www.pedigreelines.com/dog/pedigree/id/39160

AKC is only a registration body. They only record lineage and show results. AKC registration is not indicative of quality. Just like having a drivers license doesn't mean you are a good driver. Just that you met a minimum set of requirements to qualify. In the case of the AKC, that means the breeder has not been suspended, and the dogs behind your puppy were registered. Your dog could have no teeth and five legs, but as long as the parents are registered, your puppy is eligible.

Any dog with an AKC registration can do any performance/companion events.

One thing to look for is to see if that registration says "limited" anywhere on it. If it does, then the offspring of your dog would not be eligible for AKC registration.

The DNA information is for imports and dogs who have sired more than seven litters in their lifetime (or three in a year, I think?)

Thank you for all your help. I contacted the breeder and she said that the vin numbers give available DNA tests and screenings.

I have tested Sunny and so far so good. I will make sure I look on there for any CH's as well.

Thank you for all of your help! It is really helping me.

Do check out the Pedigree Lines website....if your pup, siblings or dam/sire are registered on the site, you can go back even further than 4 generations.

Of course, inquiring minds want to know (i.e. us nosy people) - if you do find the line on the website, would you share the link? We love to find out how many of our pups here on the forum are actually related!:smile2:
