Breeding Questions

These are all the dogs in Sunny's family. I could not figure out how to show you the actual pedigree because it would not let me upload it on here.

huh... interesting thing about that pedigree, I recognize one of the dogs, but none of his ancestors are listed in any of the three generations here. Given the birthdates, it's impossible that the recognized dog is in the third and final generation.

Tofu Pup has been helping me out a lot with figuring out what tests I need to have done.
I had these simple tests that the regular vet did
(he felt her hip bones and moved them, tested her for regualr doggy diseases, and he said we are going to test her for Thyroid problems when she is older.)

Still, Tofu Pup has informed me that I should see a vet that specializes in the breed.

I am going to get her tested a lot more in the future (like an actual scan of her hips and bones.
I also plan on having her eyes checked since there is a disease that affects sheltie's eyes.

Which dog do you recognize??? I can email you the pedigree if you want?

You do not need to go to a vet who specializes in Shelties, you need to go about having the appropriate genetic tests performed. Some of them are done by a specialist (CERF). Some of them are done by cheek-swab and sent to a lab (vWD, MDR-1); you order the kit, swab the dog, and send the swabs back for analysis. You can order the kits online.

Here's a website that outlines testing, though it does not include MDR-1 (this is a new test but highly recommended):
http://www.sparkshire.com/genetic_testing.htm

I'm more concerned about the pedigree. Can you scan it and add it to your photo album?

Well, I tried to scan it today and our scanner is not working. :rolleyes2:
Of course the stupid technology does this when I need it.

I have copied it word for word and made a digital version of the pedigree with everything that is on the actually pedigree. I can email that to you? A PM won't let me attach the file.

You will notice in the pedigree that only one dam is followed by a DNA test. What this test is... simply is a requirement for the males in this pedigree. The AKC requires that a DNA test be run on a sire that sires more than three litters a year, or seven litters in his lifetime... or no offspring can be registered. I don't know why the dam was DNA'd.
I'd like to see a picture of your girl. Honesly not to upset you, but I see nothing in the pedigree that looks very good.

Hmmm...they may have done a DNA on the dam if two sires were suspect for the same litter....that way they can sort the specific markers that identify each male and the mom. Just a thought.

The CH is specific to conformation showing...she may have a dog that has a wonderful background in agility. Is there any way for her to research whether any of the dogs from her pup's lineage was/is an agility champion?

Yes... there would be the title MACH in front of one or more dog's names.

She could also see if any of the dogs in the pedigree were good at agility, but not at the MACH level (MACH is a very big deal!): they would have titles like NA, OA, or AX.

Or if one of the dogs was an obedience champion, in which case there would be an OTCH in front. Or, if the dog competed successfully in obedience at the lower levels, titles like CD, CDX, or UD behind.

Or if the dog excelled in herding, you'd see HC in front, or HS, HI, or HX behind.

Or if the dog did tracking... you get the picture.

It is true that the AKC pedigree only shows AKC titles... but if this is actually a pedigree filled with fantastic performance dogs who mostly competed in other venues, wouldn't it be likely that even one of the fourteen had at least one AKC performance title?

The one dog with the AKC title would be CH Whiteoak's Dealer's Choice II.
Does this mean I should ask my breeder about the dam's family too and see if they competed in other venues?

All these people live in a 50 mile radius from me, would it be ok that I tried contacting them? That would not be too intruding would it?:confused2:

Still, whether or not some of her ancestors competed I think if Sunny did agility she could really do well. When I took her to puppy class, the trainer was completely obsessed with having Sunny go through the agility tubes and jump over the bar. Sunny did both without being scared. It seemed very natural to her.
She loves to run and when she does I swear I have never seen anything like it.
