This July we are going to be going camping and we are bringing Cleo with us. We have taken Cleo camping before so we know what we need to do on that part. However, while we are there, we will be going canoeing. I have NEVER gone canoeing before so this will be new for everyone! I would like everyone's tips and advice and what I will need to prepare for with Cleo while on the water. I am already planning on buying her a life jacket. And I plan on taking a water bowl and some water with us, the trip will be three hours long. My concerns is how will she react. And is that all I will need with me on the water with her? Any advice would be great!
 
Fun! Life jacket is the most important part and you've already gotten that, but I would also bring some high value treats, if you've never taken her canoeing you don't know how she'll react, so you might be doing a bit of on the spot training. Honey likes to boat, but she gets overly excited about the paddles, she loves to run to get the splashes, and she wants to drink all the water that drips down from them. Have sheltie, will herd, no matter what the environment! :ROFLMAO:

I also like to put a yoga mat down in the bottom of the canoe, so the floor doesn't get to slippery for her (especially important after she decides to jump into the nice cool water for a dip.)

Finally, try to keep conscious of her needs, Honey climbs into my lap and sits there when she starts feeling the need to pee, first time we went I didn't realize that was her sign...we got out and she made a three foot line down the shoreway where everyone was fishing! She must have been ready to burst! I felt awful.

Enjoy your trip! (And make sure you have a good tick medication, we took the pups on a walk in the woods, on a trail, wasn't even much grass, no less than 4 ticks. :(

Thanks for the advice! She is on Bravecto for fleas and tics. She just started that this past weekend. So she will be good on that part. I'm glad you warned me about the potty part. I would not of even thought of that!
 
How does Cleo do with water? My two don't even like a lake beach, so I can't imagine bringing them on a boat let alone a canoe which does require some balance. A panicked dog could make it challenging. If she's comfortable with water any chance for shorter practice outing for both of you?

I loved canoeing when I was younger. I'm not sure I'd have tried a 3 hour trip my first time out. Are you going someplace that if you or the dog need to stop/turn around is that an option?

A mat or something to lay on is a great idea. Something that keeps her distracted, amused, calm not a bad idea.

She loves water so that is not a problem. I will look into a mat for her. Seems like a good idea. Also, there is an hour and half one that I just found. I would rather try that one instead. I have never been canoeing and I don't want to get ahead of myself. Apparently my husband picked one and didn't bother tell me about the other times... Shame on him. Lol

Canoes are tippy! We found ourselves listing heavily to starboard when Bitsy Boodle decided to lean over for a cool drink!

I know. I am a little worried about that part. Hopefully everyone will listen to me and cooperate.
 
Another thing to consider if she does jump what is the plan for recall? If she doesn't tip the canoe over will she stay calm enough to retrieve her?
 
The most popular one I see is from Outward Hound. But it looks like they redesigned it and it looks really strange.
