Coconut oil- :)

I have been giving Maggie and Zak coconut oil for about 2 weeks now. I have noticed that Maggie is way more playful and her joints aren't creaking! She has actually chased Zak across the room. I have been putting it in yogurt for me and for them.
I am really happy with it. I did not get this one but got one for people less money and it is the same thing.

http://www.kelapo.com/products/coconut-oil-- I started out with a 1/4 tespoon and have moved up to 1/2 teaspoon or a bit less.

Another coconut fact for ya ;-). A couple months ago, I burned my fingers on a light bulb. Dumb me....I had just turned the light on and thought it hadn't had time to heat up very much so reached in to give it another turn to make sure it was secure...OUCH!! Well,...after a bit of time passed and the discomfort was really apparent...I put some coconut oil on it and in seconds...YES..SECONDS....all was fine. Never looked back, and never touched a lit lightbulb again either! :rolleyes2:

OOPS!! I'm off topic, so let me add...Baron, Rookie and Spring thoroughly enjoyed licking the coconut oil off my fingers!! haha

My boys get their coconut oil by licking my legs after I slather on my leg cream! Easy supplement! :wink2:

Thought I would bring this up again.

I was researching coconut oil and it appears to be a pretty darn good supplement!

It apparently:

• Reduces the risk of cancer and other degenerative conditions

• Improves cholesterol levels and helps fight heart disease

• Improves digestion and nutrient absorption

• Heals digestive disorders

• Contains powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agents that prevent infection and disease

• Relieves arthritis

• Helps balance the body’s metabolism and hormones

• Promotes normal thyroid function - I thought this was particularly interesting what with a sheltie's predisposition to thyroid problems

• Helps prevent or control diabetes

• Rejuvenates the skin and protects the skin; improves skin health and fur condition

• Reduces allergic reactions

• Supplies fewer calories than other fats

• Disinfects cuts and promotes wound healing

There is also an article in Whole Dog Journal but you'll need to have subscribed to them.

I've just started giving the dogs a tsp a day. This is the raw virgin oil, not the refined stuff. The oil smells really good!

I've been using coconut oil for a while now for us and the dogs! It's one of my favorite supplements for all of us :)

This is a very important fact, the refined stuff has only a fraction of the benefits of raw, virgin coconut oil.

Virgin coconut oil is also quite a bit more expensive than refined, but its really worth it to spend the extra money.

FYI - Coconut oil is also a natural anti-fungal. :smile2:

Does anyone know if this can be purchased in a store?

I get mine at Trader Joe's. It's getting really popular and I saw it at Target the other day. Trader Joe's quality has been the best I've sampled so far. I'd make sure it were organic personally.
