Diary of a Mad Housedog: Ellie's post board and train

What kind of training was this? It almost sounds like you have a new rescue dog to deal with, one who is not sure of her surroundings, and does not trust her people.

Why would it be a bad thing to treat when the come to you? I keep a jar of cookies next to the door, they never know when they will get a cookie, so they all come running just in case this is the time.

LOL, now I get what you mean after it was pointed out to me. :rolleyes2: I need more sleep, lol.

Day two

Ellie had a great learning lesson in the backyard. We did a nice brisk walk and did sit-stays, down-stays, sit-stay then come, down-stays then come. She was perfect. The first two times we stopped I had to actually tell her to sit, lol. She did it though--no correction needed and she was looking right into my eyes when we stopped, so I don't know what she was thinking. After those two reminders, she was perfect. She got a great lesson though. While we were out there, the terror dog from next door came out and started barking. Ellie's was in a down-stay at the moment and her reaction was to growl and start barking. She got a leave-it command and and she stopped!!! However, when we started walking agin we got close to the fence and that prompted terror dog to throw herself against the fence and that was a bit much for Ellie to handle, so she started jumping straight up and down and growling and barking. I stepped on the end of the leash which caused the her to reach the end of the leash which self-corrected her. I gave the "leave-it" command and she screamed but then sat and looked up at me. We walked close to the fence again and she stayed right with me looking up at me and Richard said she turned her head to look back only once (I find the hardest thing about the drills is not walking into something while trying to watch the dog). She gave one little tiny yelp when I told her to watch me and didn't get nutso until we got close to the fence again and then she did just one little half-jump and a sharp bark and she got the command to sit she actually sat and was completely quiet and looking at me. She really got BIG BIG praise over that! I even pushed her a bit further by having her do a sit-stay close to the fence while Mia (terror dog) was barking on the other side of the fence. Ellie never moved although she was panting hard. We then walked around and did all the drills perfect. Mia eventually sopped barking although I know she was still out there. I got tears in my eyes Ellie did sooooooooooooo good! She never once tried to get up from her stays (we've had problems with this in the past). Not a muscle moved. In fact a few times she seemed reluctant to get up, lol. I don't know if she was tired or stressed or just didn't feel like it or all of the above. She was very, very animated, though. Looked very happy and was doing a cute little prance and was watching me!

When we got indoors. We waited in a sit stay while Richard went in and out the front door. The first time, she started after him and got a correction. She didnt even scream. When he came back in she didn't move a muscle so she got a lot of praise. That was a major big deal. She also got a treat from Richard because she didn't jump up or act like a lunatic. We'll try a few more of those tonight.

Overall the screaming was decidedly less, which greatly releives me. Instead of screaming she just did little yelps. At least that is less likely to have the neighbors call the ASPCA. Ricahrd talked to Mia's owner today and told her what we were doing and what Ellie's reaction was, and not to freak out. lol.

I know this is a long report, but wanted you to know. We are totally comitted to doing this. We will prevail!

What do you mean by "screaming?"

It sounds as though Ellie's getting used to being home again. I'm so glad. After reading your initial post I was worried for you.

She has such a sweet little face, it's hard to believe you were having such a difficult time with her.

Screaming as in crying like she is getting hurt. She talks back. It's a manipulative trick she uses to try and get out of things. That and just rolling over on her back and refusing to budge. She cries like she is in pain---on a LOOSE LEASH. Trust me, she isn't getting hurt on little bit.

Now I see what is going on and maybe I miss understood the post and I read your other post. I am so happy for you that She is getting used to being at home again and your are making progress.

Yes, it sounds like already Day 2 is better than Day 1. She is learning to readjust, and she is testing out her limits with you as well. Give her some time and try to be patient (and still don't let her get away with that naughty behavior). Also, don't get discouraged if she has good days and bad days. It's a work in progress :) Kudos to you for being so good about working with her and making her the best dog she can be!

Thank you!

We had a good training day today. So much improvement! Not one scream today! She watches carefully and prances so pretty! No reminders given today! We worked the front door today and she was perfect! She knew what was expected. She is very proud. The only thing she did that was pretty funny actually was do a little growl under her breath while she trotted by the fence that separated terror dog from us. Mia wasn't even out there, so I guess it was a little full of herself, lol! She was "smiling" and prancing when she went by--very bouncy! I guess the growl was a smug little way of showing off just in case Mai was outside.

She was barking at the front window today and I gaver her the respect to get up and see what she was barking at. There was a woman and dog walking by the house. I said, "thank you," and walked out of the room and to my utter astonishment she stopped barking and came out of the room with me. GASP! One other time she was going nuts outside barking at another dog that was off leash running around (I realize that is a HUGE temptaton). I said, "Thank you!" but she continued barking, so I just lightly touched her on the rear-end with curled fingers--just a whisper of a touch and told her ,"Thank you!" again and SHE STOPPED BARKING! ::FAINT::

Whose dog is this??

I so glad Ellie to adjusting so well. Sounds like when she realized the dramatics weren't going to work she fell in line. Keep practing. Sounds like you're on the down hill side now.:smile2:
