Diary of a Mad Housedog: Ellie's post board and train

Tomorrow is another day, indeed. Keep at it; best of luck. Every puppy has off days. Buffy's always seemed to fall on puppy class night.... :wink2:

That is what's important! End the training session with a success and live to train another day. :biggrin2:

Yep , there were days with Ember that I would struggle to get one thing right with our training session. I would always get that one thing and then quit for the session even if it had only been 5 mins. End on success tomorrow will usually be better. Hang in there. :smile2:

Day Seven:

I do NOT feel smug anymore! I was running the leash today and Ellie pulled several "stunts." I REALLY had a hard time keeping her attention tonight! She doesn't try to bite my heels or lag behind like she does with Richard, but tonight there was severe distractions with boys on bicycles right behind our see-through rod iron fence. To her credit, she did not bark at the kids and ordinarily she would have gone ballistic! She did her training like a trooper with her head swiveled back and forth to see what the kids were doing, lol. Like yesterday when Richard was doing the drills, Ellie decided that there should only be a few seconds allotted to any kind of activity with "stay" in it. :rolleyes2: She got up a half a dozen times and one time, low and behold, just like yesterday, she simply bolted back toward the house. She was done, thank you! So, it was correct and follow-through, correct and follow through...repeat, repeat, repeat. Sigh. We did our front door exercises and with Richard simply going out of the door and coming back in a few seconds later (imitating goign to get the mail and coming back in). Ellie did disastrousily the first time like she had never been taught otherwise. We did the exercise two more times perfectly and we ended on that note. God give me strength! I think she is getting bored with the drills.

Keep at it. She trying another tactic and seeing if you'll follow through. She'll learn your more stubborn then she is. :smile2: That's the key. I was lucky, I trained a beagle/JRT mix prior to Ember. Taught me to be more stubborn then a mule that one.

When does it get better? At what point in Ember's training did she finally comply?

Yes it gets better. I had the most problems with Ember between 10-13 months. We had been in training class since she was 12 wks old(Operative conditioning based training) and never had been what you would call an easy puppy. She had a battle of wills briefly around 5.5months when she tried to bite me in the face after a nail trim(Nail trim went fine, no drama, no screaming, I patted her on the shoulder and told her good dog and she stiffen and lunged for me I caught her in midflight just as her teeth grazed my cheek). That was the one and only time she tried to bite me or anyone. Then she was pretty good for a while. That's when the screaming and such started. I can't really say how long it lasted but one day she was just good(somewhere around 13 months) and we never looked back. She just started learning by leaps and bounds. She got her Candian CD at 14 months with a HIT. Her AKC/UKC CDs at 17 months. Her AKC/UKC CDXs at 2 yrs and her AKC/UKC UDs at 2.5yrs. I at one point never though she get though Novice. She is a willing and happy worker now and a good dog too.

I pray we get there with Ellie and I mean I literally pray. :smile2:

Day Nine:

Today when Richard and Ellie were home alone, someone came to the door and rang the doorbell (THIS IS NOT A DRILL, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!, LOL!). Anyway, Ellie did not have her collar and leash on (no way to correct her other than voice) and Richard put her into a sit-stay and Ellie sat and stayed until the door was opened and then she bolted. It was Richard's brother and nephew. I am told that Ellie went nuts and was jumping straight up and down like she was on a pogo stick and then did numerous laps of "zoomies" then came back and was totally obnoxious and would not calm down for quite awhile. BIL and Nephew know not to talk to her and not to acknowledge her presence when they come over and they followed those rules. I don't know what got into Ellie, she is NEVER that excited to see anyone! WHen I came home about an hour after that, Ellie was her polite calm self with me.

This is yet another frustrating evening. Train, train, train, train and train and we still can't get her to behave when the "real thing" happens. I could just bang my head against the wall. I am SO discouraged.
