I think Kelly's TOC is great....a perfect start.

I would love to help out...but would prefer to see what topics are left, and then I can work on those. Since I am far from being an expert on any of these topics, I would prefer the true experts to start off. I can take one of the "leftover" topics so to speak.

agreed! I would be happy to work on a topic Barb. The breeders would probably do a better job with the more specific/experienced stuff, so assign me something that you think I can handle.
 
Barb: Please count me in for whatever help you still need at this point. I somehow missed this thread (I usually just check out my favorite topics).

I'm definitely interested in this project but I'm just not sure where I can help out since I'm not a breeder or exceptionally knowledgeable on some of these topics. :(

WHY do they breed?
Puppy Mill, BYB, Hobby Breeder, Show Breeder defined
What questions should I ask?
Can you trace the blood line? If not, why not?
Can you visit their home?
Do they test for genetic diseases?
Does the breeder show, compete, participate in breed clubs?
Can you see Mom and/or Dad
Where were the puppies raised?
What should the breeder provide me with when I pick up the dog?
Contract – limited if not a show dog; a reputable breeder would also include in the contract that they will take back the dog if for whatever reason you have to give it up, other?
Vet history, including all vaccines/deworming

Kelly's list is a fantastic starting point. I did highlight one topic in bold though. Personally, I think that should be expanded to include breeders who focus on Performance as well since there are some breeders who focus on Confirmation and others who focus on Performance and have more Performance titles (Herding, Obedience, Agility, even Therapy work though that's not a title it does speak to temperament) than Confirmation. (I think we can all agree that to have a good Performance dog you want to have a dog that is close in conformation to the standard so it can be successful.)

Basically, what facet of the dog are they looking at during their breeding process. I guess that's a good way to summarize that.

Feeling better about this project again.

I'll work on the ToC again and PM some of you who have volunteered to help write up certain sections. I want to be clear that this is NOT "Barb's project". It's a Sheltie Forum's project, that I just volunteered to help coordinate. I think it will go over much better if there is engagement and participation from the forum.

p.s. you don't have to be an expert, just able to research and write (and I KNOW many of you are great at that!). There is excellent material that already exists, either on this forum or elsewhere.

I bookmarked alot of them when I was looking to get Bacca, and I'm sure many of you have done the same.
 
Just to let you know this project is not dead.

I've just had a busy couple of weeks so have not had a chance to post on topic. I've got a first draft which is about 1/2 way done. I'd hoped to get back to it today but no luck.

No problem, Barb! We know ally about hectic schedules. No pressure. Don't want anyone to stress about it :)
 
Yep, I'm planning on printing it out and posting it at work.
There are lots of comments at work about me hiding dead bodies...

I've never killed anybody.
Even when they deserved it.
Too much paperwork.


Of course, it would constitute total case closure, so maybe I need to rethink it.
