The vet just called and told me Gypsy's blood test show she is in the beginning stages of Kidney Failure.

Bun level is 55 he said normal is up to about 31.
Creatinine is 2.2 he said normal is 1.6

He is going to order me RX food for her and I am going to read up on recommended diet in Lew Olsen's book. I have never dealt with this with any of my dogs and she is so young to have this. All and any info. would be greatly appreciated. This is so upsetting. Time to take a quick walk and get some air. :(

I'm sorry to hear this Dawn. I can't offer any advice I'm afraid but I will keep you and Gypsy in my thoughts.

Dawn, I am so sorry to hear this.

Gypsy is in good hands with you. I know you'll do everything you can to keep her a comfortable as possible.

I read Lew Olson's book. You'll find some great recipes to support kidney function.

Aw Dawn :(

I hope a change in diet makes this situation manageable and you and Gypsy are happy and healthy for as long as possible.

Sending positive vibes your way.

Dawn I am so very sorry to hear the test results on Gypsy.I do not know enough about kidney failure,to offer any suggestions. But I know you will do everything in your power to make sure she is very comfortable.

I will keep you & the family in my prayers.
((hugs)) I will ask priest on Wednesday to say a prayer for Gypsy. The babes are going to church to be blessed, and I will ask for a blessing for your fur babes~

Dawn, I'm sorry that it wasn't better news. I only have experience with kidney failure in older dogs, so I don't know what to tell you. Please know that I am thinking of you both and praying for more better days than difficult ones.

Hoping that others with experience with dogs with this will weigh in. I know nothing about young dogs and kidney failure, but am shocked and sorry to learn of this. I hope the dietary change is helpful as well.

Having said this, I did have a cat who went into renal failure at 16. My vet taught me how to give her fluids. There was a learning / comfort curve and some trial and error with regard to frequency / quantity, but once I was past this I was able to give her fluids by myself. Her kidney values fluctuated from month to month and improved to close to the normal range. At 18, she was living with this condition, when she apparently succumbed to cancer.

Wow!

This is shocking news. I am so sorry to read this. Any indication on why she is going into the beginning stages of kidney failure?

Hopefully you will find a great maintenance program for her and she will thrive on it.

Keep us updated.
