How did your Sheltie get it's name?

All but Rocky came to me named. Rocky got his name because we needed (hubbys orders lol) a name that had an E sound to match all the other puppers name and ours more or less. FoxMan came with the name Foxy but my vet said that was a girls name and we could not call him that so I added MAN at the end so there would be no confusion on his gender (even thought he barks like a girl)

Layla was named by my beloved Brad. I wanted to name her Juliet, but he wanted Layla. So, of course, she was named Layla. Then I decided to look up the name. It's Arabic for "dark" or evening, with the association of beauty. Now here's the kicker: in English, Layla is...Juliet!!! :biggrin2:

Bits was named Little Bits because Brad kept calling Layla that. She ws the runt of the litter, so it fit. Unfortunately, she grew into Sheltie-zilla. :eek2: So now she goes by nicknames: Bitsy Boodle, Boods, Bibbets, Carmel Nip and Little Face.

Annie came named Annie. I wanted to decorate it a bit, and I also didn;t want her to lose her original roots. To soound more Scottish, she became Annie Laurie, after the song. We kept her first family's name, Morgan. So now she's Annie Laurei Morgan Lafferty. :winkgrin:

My forever pup was named by my children - then 6 and 4 - Timber - not for a wolf, but because whenever they ran around with him the backyward, he would keep falling over himself...so TIMBER! Like a tree coming down!

Bacca - well that is an agonizing story. He went for several weeks being called "pup". Now my 4 year old son is 17 years old and definite opinions. We could not agree on a name.

I wanted Scottish names, I wanted Greek God names (e.g. Adonis), I wanted to name him after the solar system, something exotic, something dignified. Ryan would have none of it.

It was either Chaplin (for Charlie Chapline) or Chewbacca.

Chewbacca finally stuck for two reasons:

- Bacca couldn't actually bark or growl, instead he made almost exactly the same mewling sounds that the real Chewbacca did in Star Wars
- I did some research on the word Bacca. Well, Bacchus is the God of wine (yep, that fits!). Further the emotional state of Bachneil (sp?) refers to a state of madness or frenzy. Now that REALLY fit! Watching him tear about the yard as only a Sheltie can do at top speed is pure madness!

I still remember, however, having to tell my breeder the chosen name so that she could register him with CKC. I was so embarrassed to tell her. I couldn't imagine how it would look on his registration certificate: Ruffleith's Chewbacca!

She laughed out loud and said how thrilled her husband and son would be because they've been wanting to do a Star Wars theme on a new littler for the longest time! :lol:
 
Gio is short for "Giovanni". I got him shortly after returning from a trip to Italy with a couple of friends. I'm horrible with names, so consulted my best friend at the time. He suggested that I name the puppy some great long Italian name and then shorten it ... something like "Giovanni". And so it was!

Romeo was named by his breeder. She was hoping to acquire a male from the mating that she had arranged as she had finished many dogs Championships but was yet to finish a male of her own breeding. Romeo was "pick of the litter" and named according to his prospective future job ... "Forever Romantic", Romeo for short. As it turns out, Romeo didn't grow quite tall enough to be an impressive force in the ring (he's within standard, but a bit too short to stand up to all the other males in the show ring) and he kept a very puppy-ish expression. I have great respect for this breeder, and when she saw that he wasn't the absolute perfect specimen that she was looking for, opted to neuter him and sell him to a performance home. Me!
 
Pogo got his name because when I first got him, he was very shy since he was a rescue puppy coming from a bad situation. It took him a week for him to get up the nerve to come up to me and let me pet him. He would literally go in the crate, out the crate, in the crate, out the crate. Over and over and over...etc... Plus, he's a silly dog, doesn't look serious, so I wanted a playful and unique name as well. Oh, and one that I thought would sound fun when they called his name when it's his turn for agility. :lol::smile2:
 
Riley came to me from Sheltie Rescue with that name.

Ellie (Sheltie angel) also cam to me with that name.

Marcus (Sheltie angel) I picked up as a 14 week old pup. I was thinking of all kinds of names but had not settled on one. The breeder told me that she had been calling him Marcus but I could call him anything I wanted. I looked at the pup and thought, he looks like a Marcus and I stayed with that name.

All three shelties shared the nickname of 'little sh*t head' at one time or another. It was usually right after I discovered the kitchen trash all over the floor. Not the tiled kitchen floor but the carpeted family room floor.
 
What a fun thread ! Snap was born on the first day of spring in a litter that all were given flower names. He was Snapdragon. I thought I was getting a female, having left it up to the breeder to select a puppy for me. However, two days before the pup was to fly down, I was given a choice between Snap and a female. I saw an updated picture of Snap and fell for him. Now that he's 6 mos old, Snapdragon seems too tame of a name for my wild child. I've settled on "Snap,Crackle, and Pop" for him, called Snap--- a better reflection of his personality and a nod to his grandfather, Pop Star of Northern Farm.
 
It's been a lot of fun reading about how everyone selected a name for their sheltie.

My little guy is registered as "Casia's Pistol Pete" and his original call name was Pete or Petie. The breeder selected this name because his Sire (Colt Forty-five) had a personality to match his name - in other words he was a pistol.

When I purchased him at 6 months old, I just couldn't see him as "Pete" or "Petie"; the name just didn't fit the original pictures we saw of him or the impression we got of him when we first went to meet him and talk to the breeder.

In the two weeks between when my husband and I first talked to the breeder and when we brought the little guy home, we set off to find a new name for him. We wanted something that still held to the Scottish heritage but felt like more like the personality of the pup we met. During our search, we stumbled on "Edan" (pronounced AY-den) which is Scottish Gaelic and the root for the word "Fire" in that language. It was a perfect fit! So his call name changed from Pete to Edan.

We brought him home on a Friday and by the end of Sunday he was already responding to the new name.
 
We named our first little girl (now at the Rainbow Bridge) Bonnie, as I originally came from Scotland and Shelties come from that part of the world)
and Bonnie is a Scottish name.
Then came William (his Regd. name is Shakespeare in Love) so that was what jumped out at us. Plus it suits his personality, gentle and strong.
Morgan came home on the night we was watching a movie starring Morgan Freeman and that sounded Perfect for him.
Patrick was brought home to us on St. Patrick's Day. what can I say, he suits that name as he is full of mischief.
Plus the names are all kin to the British Isles.
and now Sophie we just had to find a name that sounded like SAFFY what her breeder had called her for 14 months. so as not to confuse her.
However, as we have got to know her over the last year, SASSY Girl would have been more appropriate to her behaviours.
