My boy Ripley howls at times. It's really pitiful, like a strangled sort of howl...arrrarrrarrrgharroo....he makes a variety of noises, poor little guy, it's like he wants to speak english so bad.

My nine month sheltie puppy howls whenever we let him outside. He sleeps in his crate in my room, so when I wake up in the morning to get ready for school (about 7:00 am) I get him out and put him outside into our fenced yard. I no sooner get back into my bedroom and he is outside on the picknic table howling away. He will do this a lot outside or on a weekend when I try to sleep in, if it gets past 7:30 he will start whining and barking adn howling in his crate. Then agian as soon as I let him outside to go to the bathroom he is howling agian!! But we don't want him to go to the b-room in the house, thats for sure!

Our 10 month old puppy also loves to bark at the phone. At first we thought it was great when the cell phone rang in the other room and she barked, alerting us to the fact the phone was ringing. We refer to her as "phone dog" She does also continue to bark afterthe phone is answered. She also goes crazy barking when the computer printer is working. Small price to pay for having a wonderful dog in our lives. 
Smoke, who is very much a mommy's boy, only howls when I leave and don't take him with me. My husband always told me about the terrible fit Smoke would throw when I left the house, but I never really believed it until the day he recorded it for me. A solid 5-6 minutes of the most pitiful howling and crying I've ever heard. Since then I've tried to take him with me whenever possible

That is the same thing I go through with my Thunder (the one that was surendered to me) the only true problem is when I can't take hime he stays in his crate which is beside Sprint (7 mths) and he has now started to do it also.

I've never had a howler but by gum Tara likes to shout at anyone passing the house and when she gets her leash on for walkies the Sheltie spin starts so, so comicle.

Our tri Charlie does the same thing! If she's in the backyard and knows we are in the front yard, she can really sing the blues

I have a singer/howler
Our two shelties are brothers, one is just past the high end at height and weight, the other is just above the low end. At nearly three years old they have been around long enough to observe personality traits and I think there are no two more different animals on the planet!
Tucker, the big guy, barks just as most shelties do. He's not super exciteable but once our "perimeter has been breached" he's there to sound the alarm.
Tyler, the runt of his litter, is the howler. But he sounds more like he's trying to sing with lots of yips, yowls, and long notes of 'oooooo'. The strangest thing is that he only sings one song and he only sings when our phone rings.
We have two lines, one an emergency line for my doc husband and one for private calls. Only the private line has a 'tune' when it rings (it is the song that plays on all movies and tv programs that feature royalty). This sets the little guy off for a rousing chorus that stops when we answer the phone.
We just don't have the heart to criticize his talent. He believes he's quite the entertainer. So he doesn't the key, big deal
