Huge Sheltie...

So... we took our two boys to the vet this weekend to get their annual vaccinations and check up...

Our Sheltie, Bailey is now 2.5 years old, and about 20" tall at his whithers... He also weighed in at 44lbs!!!! Our vet said he isn't fat, he just has a larger frame, and body (compared to a standard sheltie)...

We always knew he was on the bigger side... but it never really occurred to us how much bigger he was... After he grew past 16" and out of standard, we stopped paying much attention to his size (our breeder expressed interest in possibly showing him if he stayed within standard). From then on, he was just Bailey, our youngest furry family member... It worked out well in the end, as his larger size blended well with our golden (they like to wrestle)...

Both of his parents were from good lines, and were small (well, i guess standard sheltie size :P)... Would you consider him a huge sheltie?

Just curious... and wondering how he sizes up against other large shelties on the forum...

He's large, not sure if I'd call him huge. But then again my Forrest is 50 pounds & not a bit of fat on him, so if Bailey is huge, I must have a giant :biggrin2:

Bailey is a handsome boy, there's just more of him to love!
 
Sca is 18.5 (or by the GENEROUS measurement this weekend) 17.5 and 31-3 pounds. So yep he is big and maybe a hair heavy but not bad (without feeling him I would guess a target of 39-41)
 
Biowicks I'm sure will check in with exact figures, but our last sheltie, Pavi, was really big. At one point, he was in the mid-40lb range - all muscle. I think he was about 19" or so. He was often mistaken for a collie, even by sheltie people. The only reason the breeder sold him was because at 12wks he was already way oversized.

The front office lady at our vet has shelties, and she always plays with Bailey when we're paying or picking up meds. She's commented that he's a big boy before, but we've never really had a frame of reference.... I had Bailey with me a short while, and we ran into her and she had two of here's with her...

One was about 15" or so the other closer to 13".... Bailey went up to them, and I was telling Bailey, oh Bailey, look at the normal sized Sheltie, and the little Sheltie pup! The small one, next to Bailey looked like a puppy!

She politely corrected me, telling me they were both adults... but they were mom and daughter...

Its amazing how those genes vary!
 
Asta Mae is big and beautiful at 18 inches and 30 lb. We tell her she was our special order Sheltie, as we told the breeder we wanted a "big girl". When Asta's litter was born she called and said, "Oh I think I have your puppy - she's going to be BIG."

And we were thrilled! And still are. I really like Asta's size. Of course we love Ally as well, who is 14.5 inches, right in the middle of standard. She sure looks small to us, hence the nickname, "Pipsqueak". :biggrin2:

I think your Bailey looks very handsome!
 
It truly is amazing how much variation there is in Sheltie sizes! My little girl is truly that -- little. I haven't measured her, but I'd guess she's about a foot high, and at 15 months, she weighs 14 pounds.

My daughter-in-law has a "normal" size Sheltie, who ways about 28 pounds. The vet would like her to lose 4 or 5 pounds -- but even if she did, she'd dwarf my Callie. When we got them together for the first time, I was surprised to see that it's not so much in height that she's bigger, she's just bigger boned. She's maybe an inch or two taller, and the same amount longer -- but most of the difference is in how much broader she is.

I'm pretty sure Callie wouldn't qualify size-wise for a show-dog, where as Sasha probably would, but as we weren't planning on showing her and she's the perfect lap-dog size, I don't care even care!
 
Duke was my largest sheltie, he was 18 inches and about 50 pounds, called him my wannabee collie.
Zoie and Suzi were sisters, Zoie was 15 inches and about 26 pounds, Suzi was 11 inches and maybe soaking wet 17 pounds.
so shelties are like a box of chocolate and potato chips.
you never know what kind (size) you gonna get, and like potato chips , can't have just one
