Dental plaque and tartar

Jesse had stained teeth at a very early age (one year) even though I brushed them. The vet said that some dogs have drier mouths (less saliva) than others so it doesn't wash away the plaque and tartar. He suggested Leba III. I sprayed twice a day and it has made a huge difference. Jesse now gets only one spray a day for maintenance. It doesn't taste bad at all...I tried it!

At least he is cooperative enough for brushing! Megan is not .

My Sheltieboy was cooperative about everything, but that doesn't mean that he didn't try to manipulate me.

Before every daily toothbrushing, we played a little Delay Toothbrushing Tummy Rub Game. I would slowely approach his mouth with a toothbrush. Then he would flop on his side, kick his front legs, and make play sounds. I would give him a little tummy rub, followed by a treat. (When he did something that he thought entertained me, he would look heartbroken if I didn't give him a treat.)

After seven tummy rubs, we got down to the business of toothbrushing.

(If I would have been strict, he would have let me brush his teeth without the game, but the game was too cute to cancel.)

Very interesting...She doesn't drink a lot of water, really never has, so that may be a contributor.

Awe, sounds very cute, however Megan barely lets us pet her and never lays on her side or back for belly rub Now when she sees me coming with a tooth brush, her demeanor changes, she snarls when I DO try to brush. I think it probably hurts since they bleed a little .

I think what I have to do is get them cleaned THEN slowly reintroduce teeth brushing and of course special treats/ sprays!

Zak loves to get his teeth brushed- loves it, must be the tooth paste. LOL He will be laying on our bed while I do my teeth and all I have to say is
"Zak do you want your teeth brushed" and he flys into the bathroom and sits. Maggie on the other hand loves the toothpaste but not the brushing part- she hates it as much as Zak loves it.

It IS interesting...Jesse doesn't drink much either and when he was younger I was very concerned about it. On the other hand, his sister, Kalli, drinks a lot and has much cleaner teeth!

If it hurts they will not want anymore brushing. Mozart didn't have any issues to start but he chewed up the toothbrush that came with the toothpaste (I use Nutri-Vet Enzyme paste from PetSmart) so I got another one. He didn't like the new brush. Always put up a fight having his teeth brushed. When I compared it to the one he chewed up, the bristles were a lot stiffer. I got him an infant toothbrush from Superstore the ones by Oral-B Stage 1. He didn't struggle anymore now. Of course, at the start of every session, he gets to lick a dollop of toothpaste as treat.
