is your sheltie from a breeder?

I got both my 12 year old (now on Rainbow Bridge) and my 16 week at a CKC registered breeder.

I got both on non-breeding contracts because neither was up to Sheltie standard in some small way. Both breeders are not in it for the money.

Yes, I paid a premium but I also got a quality pup with an excellent pedigree. And someone who interviewed me as much as I interviewed them.

I have also received excellent post-sale support from both breeders. They want to know about any health issues, behavioural issues, etc. because it helps them in further breeding. And they genuinely care about the pups they let go. I know, if they had their way, they would keep them all.

I'm not a fan of backyward breeders. Why do it? If you are breeding the puppies correctly with proper vet care, vaccinations, deworming, etc. there really is not alot of money in it. And if they aren't investing in these things, then you should not be interested. And most really aren't interested in Sheltie standards.

So, I'm a little biased, but I view backywards as being just a step or two above puppy mill....it's all about the motivation to breed!
 
We found Scout through a referral by a member of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Georgia. I told them what our situation was with our current dogs, and what we had in mind. We were referred to the VP of the club who bred, and was going to show Scout, but a tooth came in crooked.

We could care less about that, and fell in love the minute we met her.

She's a wonderful little girl!
 
Gio is from a back-yard breeder. Came along with serious structural defects and epilepsy. PLEASE do not support back yard breeders!

Romeo is from a wonderful local breeder who took all the steps she could to ensure that she was producing healthy and solid dogs.

I love them both, of course. Wouldn't trade them for the world. It just breaks my heart to know that Gio has to put up with so much just because the people that called themselves his "breeders" were irresponsible.
 
Max is from a breeder in the Ft Worth area. She retired from showing her Shelties a while back & now only has 2-3 litters a year. All her dogs were beautiful & she had pictures of her dogs dating back 30 years. The 1st breeder I went to turned out to be a puppy mill. I was so disgusted I got right back in my car & drove off. :mad:
 
I have 7 right now, half of them from backyard breeders. One who is my service dog was from a Champion showdog. Kimmi was from a breeder and Kimmi is a retired showdog as was Rachie and Marcus who was a Champion. Telly was from a breeder but he has a misaligned jaw so he was not able to be sold. I get what my vet calls "throwaway dogs" with medical issues that no one wants. All the rest are the products of back yard breeders who sold them to pet stores (puppymill puppers) I must admit...I have had retired champions up to unadoptable sick puppers and I adore all the ones no one even wanted. They are the stars of my group
 
Yes Jake is from a breeder. I was in contact since 2 weeks from conception so it felt like a reaaalllyy long time to wait :lol: Saw him at 3 weeks, collected him at 8 weeks.

Already thinking about my next one, love a shaded sable too, but going to let Jake get through the puppy phase first, so maybe next summer.

We got our darling mahogany sable Sheltie *Emily* from a breeder ~
she called me when she knew that her female was pregnant and again when the puppies were born :biggrin2:

My husband and I went to see the litter when they were 4-weeks-old and then we returned to choose a puppy when they were 6-weeks-old and we were finally able to take our little Emily home when she was 8-weeks-old :yes:

~ We rescued our precious tricolor Sheltie *Sadie* only a year ago and both of our sweet Sheltiegirls recently celebrated their 5th birthdays :smile2:

Breeder

We got Josh and Jessie from a wonderful local breeder. She allowed us to visit the two (they are from the same litter) as often as we liked before we brought them home.

Here in New Zealand Shelties are still somewhat 'exotic' dogs ie you fortunately won't find any backyard breeders (yet). We had to go on a waiting list for our fur kids. :yes:

Josh is slightly oversized so he cannot be shown and therefore had go to a pet home. Likewise Jessie is the tiniest little ball of fluff, she's well under 13 inches :smile2: They are the best companions this Kiwi can have!!!

my first sheltie I got from a byb before I knew better. at almost 8 years old she already has early stages of arthritus, and she has allergies. my other 2 I got from a show breeder who turned out to be a not so good breeder. although Belle turned out pretty good conformation wise. I will not be dealing with her again!
