Okay, so Ruutu is now 8 months old, still a baby. But, he pees on himself every time he goes potty. He's done this since we had him to where it use to cause rashes, now it just discolors his hair/mat it. I was just wondering, when do boy sheltie pups usually start lifting their legs? Does anyone have a male dog that doesn't lift their leg? He is already starting to mark... A LOT and gets chatter jaw every time Honey comes inside from pottying.. off of either her butt or where she sat for a cookie. I'm just wondering that because he's never around male dogs if that means he might not learn it? Or does that have nothing to do with it?

Hamish lifted his leg. Noah never did. Liam - it depends on his mood. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't.

I'm inclined to think it's half-learned and half-instinctive. Dickens, an intact male, has never done it. My last dog, who was fixed, did it only in the presence of another dog, but only when out of his own yard, walking.

My Mom's brother was quite a kidder in his day. He told a lady once she had to train her dog to do that. Wonder if she ever did?

Jody didn't start lifting his leg until he was about 8 to 9 months. It was soon after he started marking and um... playing piggy back with F-kap.
Jody and Sarah do the 'chatter jaw' thing too. I call it 'the lip', when Sarah did it as a puppy it would look like her bottom lip was quivering (I remember if cried when I was little just to get my way my mom would tell me "Don't give me that lip." So that's were I got it
). Jody just smacks his jaws together really fast.

Both Cran and Jocu lifted at 8 weeks....
Cran will stand there and pee it all out but Jocu will save some and pee in other places around the yard......
Dixie - though- she is the pee walker... she can cover some territory and pee over anyone else's pee......

Our last sheltie never lifted his leg. Our current boy didn't start until he was about 9 months. "chatter jaw" never heard that one before, cute
He always comes up chattering About 5-10 times a day... I dont get it.

Miko lifts his leg to pee. When I got Koji, strangely enough, he never did it. Koji does a squat. Not like a girl squat, but where he lowers his back end a bit straight down (not curled under like a girl or if he has to poop). No clue where he learned that. He still does that, 6 years later.
However, both my boys are neutered and neither mark.
I recall a thread about this. It seems as though it's random. Not always learned. Sometimes it's a dominance thing. I remember one person saying when the more dominant dog passed, the dog who used to squat, now lifted his leg. I have no clue.
One suggestion is to cut the hair around his privates. That's what I did. Trim the fur above, so when he'd go, it wouldn't hit that hair. OR I'd let the fur ON his privates grow long, so that when he'd go, it'd dribble down that....to the ground, instead of straight forward, onto his tummy area.
