Lifting leg? Male dogs...

Never heard, nor seen the chatter jaw. Interesting.

Miko lifts his leg to pee. When I got Koji, strangely enough, he never did it. Koji does a squat. Not like a girl squat, but where he lowers his back end a bit straight down (not curled under like a girl or if he has to poop). No clue where he learned that. He still does that, 6 years later.

However, both my boys are neutered and neither mark.

I recall a thread about this. It seems as though it's random. Not always learned. Sometimes it's a dominance thing. I remember one person saying when the more dominant dog passed, the dog who used to squat, now lifted his leg. I have no clue.

One suggestion is to cut the hair around his privates. That's what I did. Trim the fur above, so when he'd go, it wouldn't hit that hair. OR I'd let the fur ON his privates grow long, so that when he'd go, it'd dribble down that....to the ground, instead of straight forward, onto his tummy area.
So weird how it works! I'm hoping when he's in PA for christmas time he picks it up after my male dogs. All three of them lift their legs and that would put Ruu at almost being a year. I have literally never had him around a male dog... not on purpose but just realizing all of the dogs in his classes have been female :eek2:. Other than with my parent's dogs. We used to trim it up for him, but it didn't change anything. We just let it go and then puppy wipe him down every other day or so. Poor guy. The rashes used to be REALLY bad, but now with it just being his white hair, it's just kind of gross to think about

Fillion still squats. If having an example set for him makes a difference, he has the King of Lift to emulate. Koko almost falls over in his attempt to "run with the big dogs and pee on the tall bushes". I'm not concerned yet as Fillion has been behind on everything else compared to his sister. If he doesn't grow a pair soon I may have to check with breeder.

Justice who is intact didn't lift his leg until he was 3 years old and he was around his first in season girl and I was living in my house. Then he lifted his leg on the fence post and has been doing it every since.

Birch lifted his leg 2x at around 11 weeks and thought ok here we go. But he stopped as soon as he began and now at almost 2yrs he still doesn't lift his leg. Birch is neutered but he was intact until 15 months. What he does is squat down and does a rocking horse stance. Never gets a drop on him. I figured Justice had something to do with stopping the leg lifting behavior. Justice is very dominant and Birch has always been the bottom of my pack.

Interestingly I have had 3 girls who lift their legs. Jo and Jazz did the actual leg lift on trees and such and Ember will do it on rare occasion and she is a leg lifter and pee walker.

Chatter jaw.....that is so funny. Shelby does the chatter jaw all the time. Usually when she wants something. She does it a lot in the nursing home, the old people love it and say she is chatting with them.

I know nothing about leg lifting but just wanted to say my MIL's toy poodle used to squat and lift her leg. But she also did go down the steps on her front legs only. Shelby is the queen of pee walking and pee pooping.

Being around other male dogs does make a big difference to their lifting their leg. Doesn't have to be living with them, just let him watch males pee when you're out on a walk and then let him sniff the tree.

I think it's pretty normal for boys not to lift their legs until their over 9mths. Deska learnt to lift his leg at about the same time he learnt he didn't have to go home to pee:rolleyes2:. Nowadays he's such a boy, he likes to do 'creative peeing'.

Tully started lifting her leg about 18mths ago (at 5yrs), which I found out recently is actually a sign of hip arthritis - I just thought she was copying. But she doesn't lift too well and it actually makes her more smelly.

Casey is 5 months old. He also pees on his tummy fur. He's not hiking yet but I have seen him mark a spot last week that another male had peed on. I've had two other shelties and bot hiked in due time. both were neutered, as will be Casey in a few more months.

Our Casey lifts his leg.

Brodie never lifted his leg, even after moving in with Casey.

Mom's dog Murray lifts his leg, but doesn't get how to aim mit away from himself, so he always pees on one of his front legs.

Wow! It's so interesting to see who does and doesn't lift. I've never seen a girl lift their leg, that would be kind of funny. Like I said, I don't know of a single male dog anywhere where he could watch but he does sniff trees, girl's butts, and pees next to the tree.. just not on it  We'll have to see over time I guess if he develops it! He's already been with us through one of Honey's heat cycles, but I think he was too young to understand as he didn't even sniff her butt then or anything. Now it's ALL he does.. every single time she comes in the house... and she's no where near to being in heat. :gaah I think he's just in the process of learning his body parts

Na, Deska has his nose up the cats' butts all the time (both female) - and they are fixed. He tries it on Tully to but she bites his nose and growls at him - he'll still make the attempt though. I think boys just have a fascination with butts! Oh and dogs too...:wink2:
