Lifting leg? Male dogs...

Dusty also started lifting his leg at 8 weeks. Belle does the pee walk leg lift! Its funny because she will lift 1 leg pee, slowly walk forward and lift the other leg :rolleyes2:

Dusty also gets chatter jaw, usually when one of the girls is going into heat.

I've had 3 male Shelties....none them have ever truly lifted their leg, though makes a token effort by lifting his left leg about an inch.

I think the dogs that do the big lifting tend to be more dominant breeds. And more often than not, short haired. I think a male Sheltie lifting his leg and peeing in the wind would be a mess. Better to squat and pee straight down!

The mess has a lot to do with how much hair the dog has. Both my boys pee with their leg up or down. Jody is definitely a lot messier then F-kap. F-kap has thick fur, but it's a pretty average to short length on his underbelly, so not too much to pee on. Jody, on the other hand, has a MASIVE coat, it's not very full, but it's SUPER long on his tail, belly, ruff, front legs, and especially his chest (pretty much everywhere but his back) Last time I measured the fur on his chest it was 6 1/2 to 7" long. So with all the long hair around his under belly he really makes a mess of himself.:rolleyes2:

IDK if it has to do with dominant or not. All of my mom's males lift legs. 2 shelties and a yorkie. But the one sheltie is definitely the alpha of the three.

I don't believe that breeds tend toward dominance--if you believe the theory, that's a social standing, not a breed characteristic.

Don't know how true it is but... My vet said that pups raised around stud dogs learn to lift their legs sooner, and ones that are not around studs generally never lift or rarely do.

I do know in my case yes Dusty was raised around stud dogs, and my other male Sklyer who wasn't raised around other males rarely lifted his leg until I got Dusty and he (Dusty) started to mark, then Skyler started to mark and now lifts his leg every time. Btw Sklyer was 5 y/o when I got Dusty

Jester started leg lifting when he was about six months old not sure as to the why perhaps due to neighbor dogs.

Our angel (Tala) was lifting his around the same time six months or so.

Fox well we brought him home at nine weeks or so and he would already lift the leg. He still does this not sure which one will rule the roost so to speak when they get older.

Jester is almost two Fox is just over six months.

 this thread has gotten me so intrigued and here I thought you guys might think I'm a weirdo for worrying about Ruutu not lifting his leg. I'm convinced it's because he's only ever around female dogs. Though from birth-8 weeks he lived with 13 dogs plus the 6 other puppies. They all lift their legs (the other dogs, don't know about his siblings). I'm hoping when he's home with my parent's dogs this christmas he learns off of their males doing it. My parents newest sheltie didn't do it until he was about 10 months old, but he's much smaller than Ruutu. (he's 13" Ruutu is on the verge of 18 1/2") If not, I'll just always have to stock up on puppy wipes. His poor white belly hair is always yellow :ick
