Poor Birch

Holy cow - I would have had a heart attack - AFTER I had waded in and pulled the dog off, like you did. I'm sure you were worried the whole time you were gone. Sorry that Birch sustained an injury! At least you found it before it became an abscessed mess. Our neighbor's husky used to climb an 8 foot fence to come visit our first Sheltie Skye... and it was amusing up until she decided my bunny who was in a pen in the backyard looked like a tasty snack!!!! Same scenario - she grabbed Pedro, he screamed, my hubby leaped into the pen and grabbed her by the scruff and tossed her over the pen fence.

What a bummer to now have to keep him quiet for a month. You have my sympathy but I'm glad he's OK.

Too bad Sheltie Nation folks don't all live closer, we could all baby-sit each other's dogs!!!

Poor Birch! I hope he is doing okay, not sure how you keep a sheltie quiet for a month.

It's stories like these that make me worry about leaving my boy. I had surgery a little over 2 weeks ago and agonized about where to leave Koffoy. Fortunately, my cousin was able to keep him for me. She gave me daily updates and pictures and spoiled him with love. I knew he was in good hands.

OMG! I just saw this. Poor Birch! I'm assuming the tear happened when the other dog was biting at him and roughing him up? Jeez! And seriously, cannot believe the sitter didn't do anything. Good thing you know how to handle dogs, granted, I probably would have hoped for the best and done the same (meaning, getting in the way, yikes). Glad to hear you found it as soon as you did and that it's being taken care of. Hopefully you'll survive trying to keep him calm....only 3 more weeks to go.

I guess the lucky thing is that it was Birch. He is strong and big. If it had been Justice or Ember, they may have been killed or more seriously injured.

Justice is sort of frail at 14yrs. I don't know what may have happened if it had been him. He was standing right next to Birch.

Oh gawd....so true. So very true.

I know someone asked, but I am curious too, is this something a "normal" sheltie owner would have noticed? Or do you think we would have chalked it up to bruising? As a vet, I'm sure you know what you're feeling and if it's more than "just a bump" to the point of seeing a vet. Always good for us laypeople to learn too. :)

There was no bruising of the skin. Someone may have noticed the lump but maybe chalked it up to bruising under the skin. I did not find it until he was home 4 days. So it was not that easy to find. The swelling was just fat and fluid, a seroma. It may have resulted in a week or 2 but the tear likely would not have.

He got a bath yesterday because the stapkes cane out and he was blowing fur like crazy and I found 2 more healed puncture wounds I never found all. Dang sheltie fur.

Thanks for the follow-up. I'm glad he's okay, especially considering you found other things (glad they're healed). Ugh. Poor Birch. I'm glad your dogs are so resilient. :)
