Prayers for Rocky Please

Were you able to have Rocky's MRI done today? He has been in my thoughts all day with prayers for some good news.

Trini

Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts for my little one. Yesterday, the MRI has confirmed our worst fears... a nerve sheath tumor in his cervical spine, near the C6-C7 region. We were only given options to "buy time" but no cure.. Either amputation, radiation, and/or surgery to remove the mass, but with it being in the spine, clean margins are not possible, recurrence usually always occurs, and surgery could cause paralysis. Conservative route would just be pain management.. Currently he's on tramadol, gabapentin, and prednisone. She gave us a time frame of only 6-12 months even if we go the aggressive route and do all three options, which is very costly at $12,000... I'm not sure what we are going to do.. Surgery seems out of the question as it is too risky and doesn't fix anything. We're also not really leaning towards amputation.. The only thing would be radiation to try to shrink or contain the tumor, but I worry about him with the little time he has left because he is a very anxious dog and if he would even be happy with all these scary doctor visits, and how effective the radiation will be, and how much time we are actually buying.. We are just so heartbroken but in a way, feeling like we have been preparing ourselves to hear the news, and now we just feel committed more than ever to just give him the best and happiest life ever.. He's just so special to us, he's my first dog and I can't imagine life without him :(

Words of sympathy always seem inadequate at a time like this...but I am truly so sorry that the dx for your precious Rocky was such devastating news.

Each family has to make the decision they feel is kindest for their own little dog when faced with these choices. You know Rocky best and will know in your heart what to do to make his remaining time as happy and pain free as possible. The one blessing is that Rocky doesn't know what lies ahead...as long as his days are filled with love and the things he likes to do best he will be a happy little guy. We, who love these gentle souls, are the ones who bear the heartbreaking emotional pain.

I wish with all my heart you had gotten different news. May you find ways to make a lifetime of wonderful memories with Rocky in whatever time he is given.

I'm so sorry to hear about Rocky's results. You will know the right thing to do for him. This is the hardest part of loving these wonderful animals that share our lives. Treasure the time you have left with Rocky. You will all be in my prayers. :hugs

My heart goes out to you as I read your news. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I hope you will simply give Rocky a glorious, loved time with you in his remaining days. Sometimes the battle is not worth the suffering, especially when it's counterbalanced by anxiety, pain and, yes, expense.

As Rocky is your first dog, you are sadly now learning what Kipling called in his great poem "The Power of the Dog."
"Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear."

Yet none of us who have loved even dozens of dogs would trade the joy, even with the pain that inevitably comes. Love your boy -- cherish his gift. :hugs

Such heartbreaking news. I am so very sorry for your family and little Rocky.

While I understand it is the job of the doctors to give you options, only you understand the potential trauma it may cause Rocky in the long run. We all understand the sadness you are feeling and wish we were there to be able to comfort you and dear little Rocky.

One thing I do know is, he understands your love for him, pain management and being together with you is what he wants and needs. To precious Rocky, bless your little heart... My boys send their love.

Hugs, kisses, pats, and prayers being sent to you! :hugs:hugs:hugs

Dear Rocky's Mom,
I am so sorry and I want you to know that I understand completely what you are going through. My dog, Jack was diagnosed with a tumor on his spine a month ago. Our vet helped Jack go to Heaven just yesterday.
I've cried everyday for the past month but I've also learned some valuable lessons. At first all I could think about was saying goodbye but then I started to treasure the moments that I still had with him. A month doesn't sound like a long time but there was a lot of love in that month and believe it or not even some smiles. (He kept his quirky little personality till the end.)
I completely believe in the power of prayers and I also believe in miracles. Jack had a few "miracles" in his life. My Jack is in a better place now so I will start saying my prayers for your Rocky.
God Bless
