Puppy Food

I feed a rotation diet. I bought orijin puppy, taste of the wild puppy, and merrick all life stages. Now, I've switched to the 'all life stages' of those brands.

We are two very opinionated individuals. That said, I don't think you should "bulk" all Breeders into your possible experiences. I trust our breeder to tell us the straight dope as they feel is correct through much research and actual whelping of puppies as well as raising and caring for many adults. Many years of breeding Shelties does go a long way.

I full well realize Chip is only one but I am not going to degrade Iams or any of the others just because of one or a few opinions. As I said before, "Chip is doing great in all aspects, Iams it is for us and Chip."

That's your personal choice. If your dog is doing fine, I'm on the page if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Bacca's breeder recommended pro plan and I fed it for months, but then his stools starting to get nasty so I did some reasearch and switched to grain free.

Ive always said that when I was growing up our dogs lived on dog chow and table scraps. Could they have done better? Maybe?

So I do choose to try to find the happy middle ground of wholesome food at a reasonable price. And yes, I look for supplements and balanced proteins, and no unnecessary fillers, like corn.

I am on my third sheltie in my life. Neither of the two previous ones did well on chicken. Gassy, and runny coming out the back end, though they didn't mind eating it, the results weren't fun for me to tolerate. So lamb was the best choice for them. Lastest puppy was raised on Kirkland chicken dry kibble from breeder, didn't have Costco mbrshp so changed her over to lamb and after the 1st day home, wasn't gassy, so I don't think chicken is the best choice for shelties. Or that is my experience. I got a pamphlet with my 1st sheltie that was printed up LONG ago and it said a diet of lamb, a few potatoes, and occasional fish for their coat was all you should ever feed the breed. I think it was published in the '50's. Kibble wasn't around when it was printed, I don't think. But that probably was the diet available where they originated in the Celtic islands. Maybe a bit of oats thrown in, ha.

Does anyone remember Walter Kendall Fives kibble-my uncle raised foxhounds, beautiful dogs, and I remember getting into the big green card board box it came in, scooping out the kibble for his dogs when they came to visit. It had the different colors/flavors, and the black one I think was charcoal and the dogs fought over those. They loved the stuff, but I think it was because of the variety at each meal. But that was WAY back when, choices were few on what to feed your dog.
 
Oreo decided he is not a fan of the Eukanuba and would basically cry like a baby when he smelled the girls Fromm.

I know, spoiled baby, but I switched him to the Fromm Gold Puppy. He LOVES it and seems to be doing great on it.
 
Callan is on TOTW puppy and doing great! He is down to 2 sometimes 3 poops per day and pretty much on schedule (3 if we've done some training and extra trats). I'm still concerned that he is getting a little chunky. I've just started to cut back on his lunch time feeding to transition to two meals a day.

Indy on Now! Senior poops mostly once per day. I swear though he could hold it 24 hours! This dog is part camel!


Does anyone know how to calculate calories per day for a growing puppy? The dog food calculator that I use assumes full grown dog.
 
Cubby is now 1/2 cup mixed TOTW pup & Acana Ranchlands 2x day. He is 7.5 pounds nearly 11 inches and thin.

Dropping the Mell meister to 2/3 cup TOTW pup & Acana Ranchlands 2x a day. God help us that she doesn't try to kill and eat us all!
 
Baker's breeder had them on Fromm's Puppy Gold, so our choice was easy. His little poops are so cute!
 
So Bailey ( 6 1/2 months) is on Proplan Puppy because that's what the breeder fed him. I am looking at what to transition him to adult food & it is really tough.

Here is my situation. My cat his allergies & chicken & possibly beef and has had problems since Bailey came along since the little bugger got into his treats & was covered with a rash...still fighting it 2 months later. She drinks from Bailey's water bowl all the time even though her bowl is full of fresh water so thinking there could be some cross contamination.

So I decided when I will switch Bailey to adult food (likley soon since his proplan is chicken) , it will be one without chicken or beef. I wanted to feed him Fromms however it has chicken cartlidge in it. Arcana's protein content looked too high & based on all the info I read decided it was too high in protein.

So the one that has a good variety of non chicken & okay protein is Wellness since it has limited ingredients. The Wellness Salmon was recommended by our local Gloal Pet Food store for a shiny coat & has 25% protein.

Anyone have experience with Wellness Simple- Salmon & Potatoe adult food?
