Puppy Trouble

Hi am brand new hear and found the forum looking up symptoms for puppies. Our sheltie Maggie is almost 9 weeks old she was born May 31/09. She came home on Monday July 27 and was fine until Thursday July 30. She was throwing up and had some ruiny poop we took her to the vet Thursday morning and we were told it was probably something she ate and the vet gave her some nausea medication and another shot of something so she wouldn’t get dehydrated and the vet said she would sleep for most of the day. When we arrived home she was happy wagging her tail running around and then she slept the rest of the afternoon. When she woke up around 8pm she seemed groggy but picked up and turned into the ball of energy that we love and everything seemed fine. Friday morning we gave her breakfast, ground beef and rice, she ate most of it she seemed happy I played with her for a while and she took a nap and that’s how her day carried on like normal.
At 5pm Maggie threw up her afternoon meal and went to bed, she had a runny poop that had yellow mucus in it and had dry heaves. I thought that her nose and paws felt warm. Our vet closed at 6pm and it was now 730 so I called the emergency number and explained her symptoms and was told that it could be stress from being away from her mother and that this is not surprising behavior. This morning she is now throwing up white foam. I looked on the internet and saw parvo or worms as possibilities.
We are taking Maggie into the vet ASAP but it is the long weekend in Canada and the vets are pretty busy. My family and I are completely stressed out and worried out of our minds. I am not sure if I am overacting but I have had a few dogs all raised from pups and never encountered anything like this. Is there anything else I should be doing or any ideas?

My heart goes out to you, its terrifying to try to help a little puppy that is sick and can't tell you what is wrong.

You are doing the right thing in going for a second vet visit. I don't have any other words of wisdom, just wishing you well and praying for your baby.
 
You're definitely doing the right thing getting a vet check. My first thought was giardia, but there are lot of things it could be.
 
I am glad you are getting your puppy to the vet. Our Pixie, now 4, had exactly the same symptoms the day after we brought her home at 9 weeks old. After testing we found she had Coccidia, a form of worms common to many puppies. It took a few months of treatment with medtronidazole (flagl) and Albin (antibiotic) to get her better. We also gave her a special diet of limited-ingredient kibble which helped. It sounds as if your little one might be suffering from something similar. I hope it's a simple remedy. Kudos to you for your persistence with the vet and shame on them for brushing it off as "stress."

Thank you very much everybody for your support. Well, we got Maggie into the vet and before I was done telling the vet what she had been doing, the vet thought it was Parvo Virus. They took a stool sample and blood test got her on the IV giving her anti biotics and other medication. The Dr. gave her a 70-80% chance of making it. I am pretty upset about this, when we took her in on Thursday we brought a stool sample with us and were told she didn't fit the symptoms for Parvo and if it was anything serious she wouldn't be bouncing around and playing. Even yesterday at this time (3pm) she was running around and playing. The house is a pretty quiet place and Maggie is being prayed for. The vet also told us if she does come around it will be a 5 to 7 day hospital stay.
We called the breeder to tell her about the Parvo but she is at a dog show, there were 10 puppies at the breeder. I am not a dog expert but I think she is a good breeder, she is part of numerous associations and has a 10 day guarantee for her puppies and also gives you 6 weeks worth of health insurance worth $900. This was the farthest thing from our minds when we brought Maggie home.
I don't think she got Parvo at our house. In June we had to put down Sheba our 12 year old Shepherd cross due to cancer. I am 24 so I had her for half my life very hard letting go. I don't think Sheba was a Parvo carrier because on her blood work her white blood count was normal it was her red blood cell count that was low and Parvo only affects the white count, from my understanding.
I guess I am rambling a bit, but thank you for the support and we just called the vet to check in and she's still hanging in there and we will be checking back in tomorrow at 9am. The vet said tomorrow is the big day where she will god willing show some improvement.

When I was breeding shelties, I always made sure that they got their parvo vacines asap. I was told the parvo vacine was only 80% effective. Out of 4 litters, the smallest runt that I had ever had caught parvo, but not the rest of the litter. I guess the runt just didn't have a good enough immune system.
He caught it at about 9 weeks old, but I was able to nurse him at home. The Vet new me very well and gave me an IV and other medications to use at home, and he came through it just fine. I'm just saying that something like that could have happened to your breeder. At any rate, I will continue to pray for both of you. Good Luck.
