Puppy Trouble

It's great to hear the good news Matt. So glad that tomorrow you will at least have easier access to the vet. I agree, why is it these things always happen on a weekend or, at the very least, after the vet's office has closed?! In any event, we'll keep the prayers coming for you and Maggie.

As for your bedding etc., bleach is absolutely the best but if you have any doubts about toys or anything else, it's worth just replacing. As for spots in the house, the rug, the furniture, that you can't bleach, a good spray of an antibacterial spray like Lysol might work. I'd spray it well and leave it on for 24 hours to soak in. It might be good that she's at the vet's for a few days...it will give you time to kill the virus.

Keep the updates coming....sending good thoughts!

I haven't been on much over the weekend so I'm just reading this thread myself. What a scary situation! I'm so glad that Maggie is at the vet's clinic and is doing better. I will keep all of you in my thoughts. I just heard a story on the news this evening stating that Parvo is going around a lot more than usual this year and they rattled off a list of symptoms. They are saying that all dogs need to have a parvo booster every year.

I too have not been online much this weekend, due to the long weekend. So sorry you had to go through this, and on this weekend of all weekends! Glad to hear that she's doing better!

Thats great, Maggie seems to be doing much better. My next door neighbour's lab had parvo at the same age and was pretty sick. Now she is a super-energetic, fit and healthy 2yr old so it didnt have any lasting impact - except she is really affectionate, I think because she got so much cuddling from everyone!

Hi Noneeds4me, I read back through my Saturday post and I did not directly tell the results of the stool sample and blood work. It did turn out to be Parvo and to get the results of the samples only took about half an hour. Sorry for the confusion, I don't think I was in a very calm state of mind when I wrote that.
Thank you everyone for the support
Matt

Matt...thanks for clearing that up for me. I was hoping beyond hope that they were only treating her for Parvo as a precaution. Actually, this is all new to me? I've never experienced Parvo, thank God....and never heard that it is possible for them to get it via their own vaccinations like this. Makes sense though when you think about it..<sigh>..

Prayers are in the works...and I'm so sorry that all of you have to go through this.

You came to the right place for support ;-).

I talked to the vet twice today. Maggie has been keeping her food down not throwing up anymore and lost her fever. She does still have some diarrhea and is still on the IV. When we called back this afternoon the vet didn't say she was out of the woods but she has drastically improved. They won't let her come home until she loses the diarrhea and is running around which is fine with me.
Now the fight with the breeder begins. The breeder insists Maggie was never exposed to Parvo and none of the other puppies are sick and wants our vet to call her vet and fax over all the test results. Our vet said this is normal because the breeder is worried about her reputation, but no matter how you cut it Maggie started showing symptoms 48 hrs after she came home and Parvo takes 5-10 days (120hrs min) for symptoms to show up. Also I went through our last dog Sheba’s medical records and she was up to date on her shots and was tested for Parvo before she was put to sleep. I paid $850 for Maggie and put a $100 down payment on her when she was 5 weeks, I signed a contract where I would get her spayed and give her a loving home and ect, the one clause for us was, "The dog is guaranteed healthy and of sound temperament at the time of sale and for seven days after possession date. It is recommended that the buyer have this dog examined by a reputable veterinarian within one week 7 days of purchase.” Maggie was healthy for less than 48 hrs. All I want is some help with the medical expenses; Maggie is by far the most expensive dog I have owned and also the sickest.
We decided to get her new toys because we couldn't get the smell of bleach off them and have bleached a lot of the backyard.
Thank you so much for your support and thoughts, it is really nice to hear success stories from Parvo and that it is not a death sentence.

When I was talking about the runt I had, he was by far the smallest sheltie pup I had had in 4 to 5 litters. All puppies were given their parvo shots, asap--not waiting until they were going to a new home. A new home is a stress to the puppies and they need to be given their shots ASAP, so that you can socialize the puppies early. If the puppies were not finished with their vacines, I only let people and kids over that did not have pets or that I had looked at a copy of their dog's vacinations. The Parvo shots were only 80% effective at that time and as far as I know haven't gotten any better. When my runt puppy caught Parvo, none of the others in the same litter caught it, because they had a better immune systems at that time. But that puppy caught it at my house, and I was responsible for the Vet bills. Your breeder will have to pay your Vet bills, and should agree to it soon, or you will need to take her to small claims court, where she will ruin her own reputation more publicly. Either way, you should be at least reimbursed for the Vet bill. Hope and pray Maggie keeps getting better fast. Best of luck to you.

Thank goodness Maggie is on the mend.

Good luck resolving the problem with the breeder. It doesn't seem as though there is much doubt she is responsible for the vet bills. I hope it's settled amicably. You've got a little puppy who is going to need your attention and love when she comes home.

You probably already know this, but a dog can't contract parvo from the vaccination.

I hope Maggie feels better soon. And good luck dealing with that breeder. I'd be willing to bet more of her puppies are sick! Can you call a humane society or someone to investigate her breeding facility?

Best wishes,
Debbie
