Rest time?

Abby's Dad

During the week Abby gets a good 6-7 hrs. rest while I work then she gets a good 1 hour walk in the evening. On the weekends she gets zero rest. This past Sunday we all were in the yard doing stuff and every time she would find a spot to lay down something would move ( cat, squirrel, turkey, horse, wife or me) and up she is to see whats going on. I can't move without her moving. She walks around then trys to find another spot to lay down until I move again. On these days we do not go for afternoon walks as she can hardly keep her eyes open by dinner time.

Now comes the question part - come Monday she appears very lethargic, stiff and sometimes I hear clicking coming from her. (I click and I know its from inflammation and doing too much). She is generally fine by Wednesday. Do you think that I should enforce one or two naps during the day or just keep letting her do what she wants?

Who gives their dogs rest/nap time when your home all day? I would mean like a forced nap?

How much rest does your sheltie get during the day?

As usual all feedback is much appreciated , so thank you.

It's hard for me to give any advice because my dogs have a ton of energy and usually don't get as much exercise as they would like.

But, on days when we do really busy, really exhausting things I usually try to follow up with days of rest. For example, after an agility trial I usually give the next day or two off to let them rest up.

If she seems to have issues after a long day like that, I think you might be right to allow her to have a short nap in between. Or, can you give her something that will keep her quiet while she is with you? Sometimes I give my two bones in the yard so that they can "relax" but still be with us.

That's her problem, she just does not know how to relax. She is also on restricted diet right now, however after we work through the digestive issues the bones sound like a good idea. What do you give them and how much?

Yep, my girl is the same. She doesn't often relax on her own. And she's always up and down when we so much as move a muscle.

I give my two a Himalayan dog chew. I pick the medium sized one (not the small) because they can chew them up pretty easily. The medium sized one lasts longer, though I do take it away when it gets too small. The nice thing about them is that they don't smell bad (though they do smell a little like cheese) and they don't get gross.

Another thing that I would say is that I don't let them have them for more than 30 minutes at a time. I wouldn't want them to eat that much, and I know they would happily finish them in one sitting if I let them.

this is a easy question for me, lol, i take naps durn the day, and my girls join me.... they do not think i should ever nap alone....so

I want to thank the two of you who took time to type me a response. Shame on the rest of you!! You have time to read threads but no time to type a few words to very important questions. Maybe they don't seem important to you or maybe i don't get responses because I am not a supporter. Well, i'm sorry I have a sheltie that costs me $200-350 a month. I do not have extra money. When I only get 2 reply's from 90 views then I need to go see another specialist or vet so I do the right thing to a hurting dog. Thanks:no:

You know, a post like this makes me not want to respond at all - it's HIGHLY offensive. Not everyone is on daily and/or not everyone may have something to contribute to your thread. I'm not going to post something unhelpful, like in this case.

You tell me, what sort of help is it to you for me to post "mine sleep most of the afternoon regardless of what we are doing"? See; it doesn't help your situation at all so I'd rather leave the posting to those, like Ashely, who have more to offer you.

WOW, I dont think that response was warranted at all! If you look at every other thread that is the normal view/response ratio. YOU need to remember that just because its viewed does not mean anything there are many variables with the views, such as people who are guests viewing, people looking for similar advice, some may have agreed with what was already posted so there is not any new information to add...etc.

Now onto your question, what Ashely posted is a great suggestion, hence why no more was added. They only other thing you could try is crate rest time while you are there as a forced rest.

Please keep in mind that this is an open forum. People have the choice to respond or not to respond to all posts. Just because people didn't respond to your post doesn't mean that it was a personal attack on you. There are many reasons why people don't respond to every post.

1. Time constraints: Many members don't have time to read all posts, and therefore read those posts that interest them.
2. Helpful input: Many members won't respond if they don't feel that they have any helpful advice. Most don't post just to post.
3. Free will: People have the option to do whatever they want--respond or not respond for any or no reason at all.

I would say that usually the # of reads to # of responses is a pretty small ratio.

However, your personal affront to all members who did not post is very off-putting, and may cause some people not to respond to you in the future. It is in everyones' best interest to be professional and maintain composure in all posts.

Thanks for getting this back on track, Corbinam

My dogs never seem to rest. That is a characteristic of a Sheltie.

Have you tested her for Lymes Disease? Fatigue and stiffness are a sign of Lyme.

Why does she cost you so much per month?
