Sadie is suddenly paralyzed

Back spasm - that was my thought, especially after (if I remember correctly) she was attacked the other day by a larger dog. Something could have happened at that point that sent the back into a spasm. I know for myself when I have back spasms, it is very difficult to walk and very painful.
 
Good to hear that Sadie's a bit better. Hope to hear that she changes a 'bit' to a 'lot'.

When you first started describing what happened to her, it sounded something like what happened with Chelsea once when she was about 4-5yrs old. It was about 5-10 mins after an intense session of fetch, and she just started walking funny, stiff legged, and shaking. I seem to remember laying her down and trying to 'massage' the leg, thinking it was a muscle spasm. After about 5 mins, she was herself, but I wasn't myself. It scared the daylights out of me.

Is there anything like a clot-buster injection available, thinking back to what you describe, the spinal stroke?
 
It sounds like things are moving in the right direction with Sadie. So good to hear that. I'm sending prayers that it continues and she is back to herself quickly, and you can enjoy your vacation! Hugs to you and pats to Sadie.

Except that Sadie isn't in any pain and her back and legs definitely weren't in spasm then.

I honestly don't think she was injured during the altercation with the GD. I looked her over afterward and she was fine. It only lasted a few seconds, Sadie was not physically shaken, more pushed over. Although it was disturbing to watch I really don't think it was rough enough to cause that kind of damage.

I read that the cause of spinal strokes is unknown, its just something that randomly happens in some dogs.

No there's not. More than just blood is involved. I think its a small piece of vertebrae loose in the blood stream that causes the clot.
 
I am so sorry to read about this. Poor Sadie. It is so hard on them as they really don't know what is going on or why they hurt.

It sounds like you are taking the very best care of her that you can. Don't forget to take care of yourself, too. I know it is very difficult to think of anything but Sadie right now, but look at it this way--if you wear yourself out worrying, you won't be able to help Sadie. I know, easier said than done.

How is she doing today? Any updates from the vet? Will they let her go home with you today? Or does she have to stay another night?

Thanks for the prayer.

I just haven't had time to look after myself lately, between visiting my grandfather at the hospital out of time, trying to get help for a family member with a substance abuse problem, trying to be supportive to the rest of my family, helping DH apply for jobs and trying to get ready to leave for our vacation tomorrow. I've been battling a cold for weeks that keeps me up coughing all night and now I'm feeling worse.

I don't know how I'm going to get through today and tomorrow, I'm so completely exhausted.

I'm leaving work early to pick Sadie up. The vet tech I spoke to didn't have much to say so I'm hoping the vet will talk to me when I get there. She did say though that Sadie is doing a bit better this morning and that she's resting comfortably. Looking forward to seeing her, its just not the same without her.

I keep forgetting to mention Ginny. She's doing well but is kind of subdued for the most part. She's confused about where her sister is and knows we're upset. She was getting very cuddly with our friend's alpha dog last night, something she doesn't really do. I think she's just missing her Sadie. Ginny will be glad to see her too.
 
Sending more well wishs for Sadie and a get well for you Melissa sounds like you stressed to the max right now and vacation is going to do you good too. The swimming will help Sadie and hope you can give us an update before you leave. Gentle hugs for Sadie.
I wonder to if the GD incident could of caused this to happen, did you mention that to the vet? Wonder what he would say.
 
I think you will feel better with Sadie at home, just knowing that she is there. It may be a slow process, but small improvements are great news.

I hope that with her at home you are able to at least relax a little and enjoy her :smile2:
